17" to 15 for winter....
« on: November 28, 2007, 04:51:06 pm »
My 2002 MPV runs 225/50-17 (from the factory) in the summer - and i want to get down to a 15 for winter.

I just got my hands on some mazda factory 15" wheels that fit - and now need some guidance as to the right/best winter tire size to get for these new wheels.

225/60-15 (thank you tire size calculator) seems to be pretty darn close ........before I go and buy some new rubber, am I missing anything?

I appreciate the guidance.

D.

15" seems small for a van.  Are you sure the new rims clear the calipers?

Your diameter should be close (confirm that 225/60R15 is a common size - 225 seems wide for a 15") and also confirm the tire will accept the width of your wheel.

I have my doubts, but I'm not sure you're wrong, either.

Edit: Seems I was somewhat correct.  225/60R15 isn't that common for snows - all you get are performance H-rated snows.  The TT tire finder suggests 205/65R15 for the 2002 MPV LX, so I guess I have my clearance answer there,

You could also consider 215/65R15.  Narrower is generally better for winter tires and if your wheels are less than 7 in wide the narrower tires will be a better fit.

I would go with the 215/65/15 size as the preferable. You will find a lot more selection.
