Blizzak WS60 or Revo 1
« on: November 22, 2007, 09:23:19 am »
Hi,
Please help me find out, if Blizzak WS60 (92$) or Revo 1 (79$)  is a better tire. Is the ~13$ price difference (WS60 more expensive) per tire worth it. Are there any equal quality tire at a cheaper price than this.

Thanks,
CSH

WS60 is the Blizzak's latest winter tire.

Gislaved Nordfrost has been bought by some members here and liking it.

How much are your car and life worth? Are you going to risk both to save ~$50? Get the best tire - forget the "best price". My opinion only, of course.

WS60 is like an all out winter tire where as the Revo has a bit more compromise towards dry/wet pavement performance. So WS60 will give you more traction on ice in theory but when it's dry or just wet out it will feel more mushy then the revo.

That's how I understand it. Also WS60 uses that special compound on the top 55% or so while the Revo uses a regular winter compound for the tire. So the WS60 might wear away quicker.

You can consider other tires then bridgestone. There are quality winter tires from other makes. I got Gislaved cause it's suppose to be good and it was at a good price.

Still haven't had a chance to drive in the snow yet. First dump of the season and I had a seminar to go to at UofT so I took the subway.

Please help me find out, if Blizzak WS60 (92$)

I assume that is for the Camry.  What's the size?:  16x what?

Is that just cash and carry ?; no install or balance.

That's a good price.  Is that around Guelph or are those US prices?

$92? What's that for - a go-kart??? The best I could get was $168 I think, from memory for 16".

CSH has a 2007 Toyota Camry LE, tire size 215/60/16.

$92 seems like a U.S. price, he was asking about US tire shops earlier.

The Blizzak WS60 should be a pretty decent winter tire. I have had the LM22 Blizzaks before and liked them a lot. I don't know the Revo at all.

I don't buy tires on the cheap, they are too important to the good handling and stopping of your vehicle to worry over a few dollars. Within reason, get the best tire.

As Revo 1 is end of life I'd go for the WS60 instead. I've been in the situation before where I needed to replace one Winter tire that had blown and couldn't get the exact same model.

Gotta be.   FACK!!!   That US price hurts.  I don't know about you folks, but I find shelling out $$$ for winter tires somewhat DRAINING.  :P

Man, Canadian retailers along the boarder must be dying.  I know the power sport guys are.

92$ is tirerack price. Since $ hit parity the only thing we buy locally are gorceries. We are in NY atleast once a month if not more.
I am not sure but this is what i am planning to do:
Call dealers around the border and try to get them near the 92$ price on tire rack (shouldnt be very hard as most of them advertise price match guarantee). Drive there and get the tires changed. Even if it costs me 100$/tire its about 400$.
The local toyota dealer quoted me 175$ for the same tire excluding taxes and the best i could find in Tor/Miss was 139/tire. At the most I will have to pay 7% duty but that i can offset by saying i went to US and bought used tires and show my old tires. Then when its summer, it would be time to make another trip down south and buy alloys and get these tires fitted on them

PS: A friend got a used IS250 and he just got Winter+Alloys for it. The Lexus dealer here quoted 2700$+tax and he got it done in US for 1100$+tax from the Lexus dealer in US.

Ya know a hell of a decent winter ice radial is the Dunlop Graspic DS1

Next Generation Of Digital Rolling Simulation Technology In Studless Winter Traction. Premium silica-based glass fiber tread compund remains softer at lower temperatures for improved ice traction and control. Innovative Digital Rolling Simulation II construction technology mazimizes tire performance on icy, snow packed and dry roads. Snow pillar centre groove enhances gripping capabilities for improved snow traction. High-density siping and increased contact area enhances ice grip and improves tread life. CHAOS tread block arrangement significantly reduces tire noise

Wally World has your size for $110. installed.  Not balanced.  IMO, these are the best AFFORDABLE winter tires that are very close in performance to the Blizzacks.

The DS1 must be older generation and Wally World got at bunch and is blowing them out.  I see Tiretrends.ca has the Dunlop Graspic DS2 (nextgen?).  I could only find reviews on TireRack for the DS2 and it sounds like a good tire.

I have had 2 setsof Graspic's from Sam's Club. It's not a bad tire and you can't beat the price. I paid @ $90 each last Winter.

You are right.  The main difference seems to be that the DS2s are run flats to some extent because the tread is identical.  Both Q speed rated.

Interesting read

Nokian NRW,
Vredestein SnowTrac

http://www.snowtire.info/TireReviews/FirstReview.htm#6.3.DunlopGraspicDS-1|outline

Graspic DS-2 DSST CTT tires are 2nd generation Digi-tire Studless Ice and Snow winter tires that also utilize Dunlop Self-Supporting Technology (DSST) and Combined Technology Tire (CTT) to produce runflat winter tires that deliver extended mobility along with enhanced traction in snow and on ice.

NOTE: The first 55% of the Graspic DS-2 DSST CTT's tread depth features Dunlop's high-grip silica-enhanced compound while the remaining 45% features an all-season tread compound. Snow platform indicators (basically, snow wear bars) are molded into the Graspic DS-2 DSST CTT's tread grooves to inform the driver when ice and snow traction will be reduced as the tire's tread wear reaches the point where the premium high grip silica tread compound is about to wear away.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Dunlop&tireModel=Graspic+DS-2+DSST+CTT

So after 55% wear down they lose their ice grip.     I assume the DS1s will be no better.  Be interesting to see how fast 55% comes off.  I hate snow tires.
