So, did you get your GPS unit yet? I'm curious to hear how you like it.
Showed up yesterday. Have not had much chance to play with it yet but here's a summary and I'll probably update in a week or two after the two long trips I have planned.
Its extremely compact. Easily pockatable. The windshield mount seems sturdy and easy to place. You really need to use the car charger. It says 2hours battery life but I think even that is a bit optomistic.
You can use this thing right out of the box. A few clicks to set up language etc and you can punch in your destination and off you go. I downloaded TomTom Home and allowed everything to update. A newer map came down as well as some other updates. The mapshare feature is kinda neat where you can upload errors or changes you see to help others update. Even the newest map had some pretty serious holes though. There are streets in Moncton that have been there for more than a year that are not on the MAP. Some of the POIs are pretty outdated also.
I just tried a few local trips (already knew where I was going). Sat aquisition was very fast. The One does not support text to speech but gives you at least two prompts "turn right in 200 feet now then turn right when you are approaching the turn" Even though the measure was set to metric you need to pick a differnet voice to get it to speak in metric instead of feet and miles.
The routes that it picked (fastest) seemed to be based on getting on the higer speed roads and not necissarily what I think is fastest but its hard to tell until I do more involved trips. Two clicks will calculate an alternate rout which is very nice. You can correct the map with a few clicks and then upload the changes for everyone to use.
The screen is small but I have no issue reading it. Voice is load and clear. It got me where I was going.
So far I think for the price it gives you the basics in a very compact package. its easy to use with little learning curve. You can take it out of the box plug it in pick your destination and go. I wish the maps were more up to date but this would be an issue with even a more expensive unit as they use the same maps. There are no frills like Blutooth phone, no3 or text to speech. if you want those be prepared to pay another 100+. It think for my limited use its going to be just fine.
