I have troubles faulting a company for trying to boost sales and profits. However it could be that Subaru is going to alienate its loyal followers and still fail to attract new ones.

I agree that the 4 sp automatic and 5 sp manual are not appropriate for the WRX. Subaru has a 5 sp auto and 6 sp manual available for the Legacy which they could easily install in the WRX.
Also, where are the side marker turn indicators and Xenon headlights?
Both WRX's would look much more sporting if the optional black mesh grill was standard equipment.
My major beef is with the pricing structure: why is the 5 door $900 more than the sedan and why is the WRX about $9000 more than the Impreza Sport - that's a pretty expensive turbo (plus a few other items).
Check the U.S. prices: the WRX Premium sedan is $26450 and freight is $645 (vs. $1495 in Canada). It's almost $7400 cheaper in the U.S. I'll be trading my 04 Acura TSX (6 sp) in the spring and the local dealer had better be prepared to be reasonable or I'll be driving a Mazdaspeed3 or a VW GTI (5 door).

If I were in the market for a new vehicle the 2008 WRX wouldn't even be on my short list.  The VW GTI and Mazdaspeed 3 would, though.

Honda did the same thing with the Civic Si for several years, before coming out with the 2006+ version.  Until that one, the Civic Si was too soft for the enthusiasts, but still not attractive for your middle-of-the-road buyer.  Let's hope Subaru realizes in a few years that they need to re-sharpen the WRX.

The WRX is a car where this massive US price difference really hurts it.

A 4speed auto or "only" 5 speed maual, crappy stereo etc etc are not nearly so bad in a 25K "pocket rocket"  AWD Turbo car. You expect to give up some nice stuff for the AWD and performance in a 25K car. But when you are buying a 35 K car you start to expect more. If Subaru was selling this thing for 25-27K its be hard to fault the 4 speed auto as a cost cutter to get to a price point. At 30K plus? Not acceptable.

So then you, and those that think the same way, won't buy it. Subaru doesn't owe anyone a car for $25K. If people don't don't buy it then Subaru will either try to increase it's value or it will disappear. Big deal.

No I won't.

Its not about "owing" a car at 25K. Its about an expected level of equipment and refinment at a price point. I know that a GTI is a sub 30K car in the US. But I don't feel that a GTI tranny, stero, interior etc is out of place in a 30K car.

I agree that is why I'm getting mine from the US but in a hatch version and in red.
I think I'll call it the "RED WRX" pronounced "RED REX"

At least Red REX won’t have a typical Nissan Recall in 4 years for engine failures. ROFL CityPig ROFL ROFL

Is it me or did the 'reviewer' even drove the car? It seemed that all he did was took some picture of a WRX at the local autoshow and post what seems to be anecdotal words on the car. Huh
I find it insulting if they think readers don't need deserve the time of day to take a car out for the drive and some nice photos to accompany it...  Undecided

Driving a WRX with a slushbox is horrifying experience but Subaru using that POS 4 speed is a crime against humanity.  Thumbs Down Thumbs Down

As a devoted customer, you need get invited to one of these consumer focus group meetings and share our feelings with Subaru...

I think Haney Louka’s review was already too kind for this WRX, and feel that Subaru has once again made a poor judgment on what automotive consumers will accept.

Subaru deserves a year of poor sales to kick start the company on a new approach/path to making cars with better value. Vehicles that can deserve the price tags that Subaru is asking for their current shortcomings…...Oh I mean models.

A Montreal Gazzette article I found on the WRX. Might be of interest to some.

Whether or not the automatic should be available or not is a whole other issue, but what I don't get is how Subaru could put it in one of its press vehicles. They had to have known they were gonna get slammed for that. Why would you give a car about performance to someone reviewing its performance for the whole world to see and make it an automatic? If they wanna put the 4 speed in the WRX, fine. A selected few may buy it. But don't put it in the effing press car where the likely readers will want to know about its performance abilities Roll Eyes Huh

The pics from the car appears to have Ontario plates ?? and the background seems to look like it's in a mall near SoC HQ
