Today's Test Drive:

2008 Subaru WRX sedan, four-speed automatic

2008 Subaru WRX sedan, four-speed automaticFour-speed automatic: Though it has "lost some of its character", the new WRX is less expensive and easier to live with than last year's model, says contributor Haney Louka.   Unfortunately, "the automatic transmission simply isn't consistent with the car's mission," he says.

cut power to the rear axles and you really do have a toyota here.  Wake me when the Impreza is re-redesigned.

Driving a WRX with a slushbox is horrifying experience but Subaru using that POS 4 speed is a crime against humanity.  Thumbs Down Thumbs Down

Imagine this telephone call.

Toyota - we have a few million four speed trannies left over from our models that didn't make it just in time. Can you do us a big favour?

Subaru - What would that be oh grateful, wise and wielding master?

Toyota - take them off our hands and find a home for them in some of your models. The price is right.

Subaru - certainly master and giver of all things right. It is so. Grin

At least the auto is in a press car and not one they actually plan to sell.  But I agree, an automatic in this car is silly, especially a four speed.  Subaru needs to get a five speed into the Impreza lineup soon.  A bump in engine power for this redesign would have been nice, too...  Cheesy

Who cares about the automatic, hell they could have a one speed AT and it wouldn't bother me because I don't drive automatics.
What they should do is have a 6 speed MT, maybe the one from the STI.

I just can't help thinking that Subaru could sell a ton of WRX's in Canada if they didn't have that ridiculous price premium above the base Impreza.  ???Oh well there is always Van Bortels Subaru...

It would seem that Toy/Sub are taking a page from the Detroit maker's playbooks - as in the current reincarnation of Chevrolet SS, Dodge Magnums, Pontiac GTO. Take a performance-oriented name plate from the past, and vanilla it up to sell to the masses who could/would never have driven the original car anyway.

Marketing 101 IMO.

Will they sell? Yes. Will they pis$ off real enthusiasts? Yes, but sales numbers count more than performance cojones.

I wonder why they don't make the WRX a manual only. Then they could also produce a model with all the tsame stuff suspension, body add ons , hood scoop interior wheels everything except the engine with the base 2.5 engine and the 4 speed auto. Call it the WRP (for pretender) and sell it for a few thousand less. Really if you would buy a WRX with the 4 speed auto you are not concerned with performance. You might want the handeling but more likley you want to LOOK like you a WRX dirver. Let look like that at a alower price. Bet they'd sell a ton.

I parked next to a black '08 WRX yesterday. It was an automatic and the driver looked 65-70 years old. Looks to me like Sooby's changed it's target demographic for this car.  Shocked Huh ROFL

The most recent GTO was pretty hardcore.  Only one engine was available...a 400 horsepower small-block V8.  The only vanilla thing about it was the bodywork.  Otherwise, I agree with your post.

I would wait for the AWD Lancer Ralliart before putting money down on the 08 WRX. The Lancer might just have the price/performance edge over the WRX.
