That Consumer Report graph shows range and mean (average). The black dot is not always in the middle because the range is not equally spread (say, if a manufacturer has lots of bad models and a single good model, then that dot will be pushed toward the left). The graph is misleading because it is shown as if that range is continuous, but in reality, it consists of number of dots that represent reliability of specific models; so, it should be a number of dots rather than a single strip... but it would not look as “sexy”...

As long as nobody starts posting pictures of their text books I think we'll get throught this OK.

The RX-8 got "improved reliability" but not "improved enough to recommend."  In CR-speak (where a car must be average, or 3 out of 5, for reliability in order to be recommended), the RX-8 moved from "far below average" to "below average."

That said, the car is unquestionably superb in other areas, such as driving dynamics, interior utility (for the genre), etc.  It's just that it has some problems (1) with automatics (where it's not redlined nearly as often as with manuals, leading to carbon buildup) and (2) with very hot climates (not something Canadians deal with, but Arizona and Texas are different matters altogether).  Too bad, really, as it's a great car overall.
"Geography has made us neighbors. History has made us friends. Economics has made us partners. And necessity has made us allies. Those whom nature hath so joined together, let no man put asunder. What unites us is far greater than what divides us." -- John F. Kennedy, addressing Canadian Parliament.

I like my MkIV Jetta, and EVERYONE agrees that they're crap for reliability.

I used to drive a MKIV 1.8T from 02-06. That ignition coil fiasco gave me grief (5 visits to dealership). The car also broke down and got towed twice (1 for the coil, 1 for a defective battery). These all happened in the first year.

Except the malfunctioning power window on the driver side, it was fine for the remaining 3 years
