My sister in law had one. Right up until she had to replace the transmission.

I'll need a pic of both the RAV and the blown transmission.   ;)

I've been on the road for a few days so I haven't been able to get online much.
My sister-in-law kept her receipt, is that adequate?

Yikes that was for a used transmission. Wonder what a new one costs?

Even tho its a 4 whl drive unit the labour cost is also rather high I believe as it was fixed at a dealership which does explain it somewhat. Even the used cost of the tranny seems quite high as well in my view also.  :)

And Steve, for your information -- I didn't have to co-sign for the kid either. He's a 20 years old who paid 22,500 with his extended warranty all out of his own money that he worked to earn. Do you pay cash for your vehicles or or you too busy being critical of others???

Nice going champ

Ya I read all that.  That was what she said after Craig jumped on me, not at the beginning of the thread.  It's all BS.  It is her Escape, the kid is driving it and she is distraught about paying for so much gas.  I don't believe there is anything wrong with the Escape.  It's the usage.

Firstly, I gotta five ya  :fiver: :fiver: :fiver: for posting those receipts.  That's exceptional.

No point in commenting on the replacement cost because so many variables are unknown about what exactly went in.  If for example, if the replacement had 80k km then $1300 plus 150 shipping is pretty good considering a mark up by the dealer.

I noticed the bill says "fluid leaking under front of vehicle", correction:  Replace transmission.  Did a cooler line break and then the tranny burned up?

I also noticed that they installed this transmission without changing the fluid since there is no fluid charged to the bill and I know that absolutely every frigging part is charged at a Toyota dealer.  I also noticed that they never changed the internal filter, which is only usually changed when the transmission is out of the car.  Otherwise they never get changed, just dump and fill.

Which leads me to this:  It is an unknown as to whether this RAV had it's tranny fluid dumped and filled every 48K km. since new up to the time it stopped working.  If ppl do go for it, they usually do only because the dealer up sells them.  This dealer may not push that kind of thing.

I suggest they get the tranny fluid changed a few times in short order because it doesn't look like they did it which they should have.  It's really simple.  I think it's a 10mm hex bolt, ya need a new crush washer and you just let it pour out (while it's fairly warm).  Install bolt with new washer and fill thru dipstick with thin funnel.  Do it again after running around in the vehicle for 10 minutes or so.  Use only Toyota fluid from the dealer.  No more than 5 bucks a litre.  4 litres per dump.

Thanks for the info, I'll pass it on to her.

She has her vehicles serviced by the book, and keeps her receipts, so I don't know what happened to the tranny, but it was towed into the dealer.

If it was a reman transmission straight from Toyota, I would assume the filter screen was changed before it got to the dealership and was included in the price.  If it was sourced from a local junkyard, then that's a different story (although those non-serviceable screens are a joke anyways).

I would follow Steve's advice and do a few quick drain-and-fills, maybe once a week, until the fluid coming out is the same colour as the fluid going in, then follow a drain-and-fill once every 20,000-25,000 km (every other oil change is a good rule of thumb).  If your manual specifies a Dexron fluid, use Dexron VI instead of Dexron III.  The fluids are interchangeable, and D-VI has much better winter characteristics and shear stability.  If a T- fluid is specified, then stick with T-IV.

Also look into installing an external transmission filter on the cooler return line.  This is what Ford requires after all transmission replacements in case debris from the previous failed transmission could not be completely flushed from the cooler.  The universal kit + hose when I installed mine was ~$50, and took one hour in a freezing cold garage to complete the installation.  Good insurance after a $2800 repair.

Just thought I'd "pop" in and fill you Arctic Steve in on a few facts. No he doesn't tow anything!!!!

This Escape is entirely his, not mine. I didn't pay a cent for any part of it, I don't pay the gas and I don't pay the insurance. He pays it entirely!!!! Pretty good for a 20 year old kid eh!!! Must be because he doesn't run around the U of O or Carleton with his pals yet and has a very well paying job. Maybe I might have put a wrong word here or there but don't make assumptions. Oh I'm sure you'd have a ball with me ... I drive a Pontiac Grand Prix.... guess that doesn't compare to a Toyota either.

It doesn't really matter what you think anyway Steve. Other people on here have been helpful. Thanks to Dan Yanoff who recommended checking the air filter which we did and it was filthy. My husband said it looks as though it hasn't been changed in the life of the car. There is a big improvement already.

So Steve, things are better and I'm quite amused at how sarcastic you are.  Don't ever assume anything. There are kids out there who happen to work hard and make good money and can pay for their own vehicles. I'm very proud of his accomplishments. I could never have done at 20 years old.
