Your ten worst import models for model year 2007?
« on: November 09, 2007, 02:47:52 pm »
The TTAC thread inspired this.  What do you think are the ten worst import cars for model year 2007?  I could only come up with seven, but I'm sure I'm overlooking some real losers.  Mine, in no particular order:

7.  Volvo S40:  I've driven it, and while it's pleasant, it's utterly overpriced and uncompetitive with similarly-priced cars, in both 2.4i and 2.5 trim.

6.  Saab 9-3:  Once again, overpriced and uncompetitive.  A moderately-equipped 9-3 Aero is priced against 328is, CTSs, and all sorts of other fantastic cars.  Reviews note rattles, inferior interior materials, and a terrible shifter.

5.  Suzuki Forenza:  It was uncompetitive when it was introduced...and a lot of good compact cars have come out since then.

4.  Suzuki Reno:  Like a Forenzo, only slightly better looking and more expensive, yet just as uncompetitive.

3.  Land Rover Range Rover Sport:  The handling of an SUV combined with the off-road ability of a sports coupe.  Awesome.  Add in a high price and disastrous reliability, and it doesn't get much worse than this.

2.  Jaguar X-Type:  Uncompetitive handling, refinement, and performance, and it's at least as expensive as the best compact sport sedans on the market.  At least it looks like an old man's car, right?

1.  Subaru Legacy 2.5i.  OMG IT'S A SUBARU, IT MUST BE GREAT!!!  Too bad that the ride is simultaneously harsh (low profile tires) and bouncy (soft springs and poor damping).  The steering is numb and too light.  The air conditioning doesn't work well, the stereo is tinny and barely audible at highway speeds, it has less legroom front and rear than a Ford Focus (based on real-life experience, not numbers), fuel economy is unimpressive, the shifter is agricultural, it rattles, it has a giant sunroof that makes deafening noise and turbulence if you ever open it up, a power driver's seat that is uncomfortable no matter how you arrange it, and for the coup de grace, it's not even competitively-priced against other family cars.

The new Eclipe to me is one of the ugliest mofo on the road.

I think the Eclipse might deserve a mention.  I personally love how it looks, but I really struggle with a car that sporty-looking being nothing more than a Galant coupe.  Every review I've read has come down pretty hard on it for its handling.

Aha!  But Mitlov, that Legacy is a domestic, isn't it?   ;)

We could throw some ringers in here:

Mazda B-series p/u?  Or Tribute?

Is the Saab 9-3 really priced against a BMW 328i? I would have thought they were in different segments..?  I know which one I'd rather have!

Only in the sense that my Jetta is not a German car but a Mexican car...

I'm going off of primary place of design, not final place of assembly.  Domestic cars rebadged as imports (B-series, Tribute, 9-7X) I'm not counting, but cars that are import-brand but merely manufactured here (Legacy), or cars that merely share a platform with a domestic car but are substantially unique (Saab 9-3) I *am* counting as imports.

The B-series is really the Ford Ranger and the Tribute is the Ford Escape so if the Legacy isn't a domestic ...

Saab 9-3 Aero (250 hp turbo V6) starts at US$35,365.  BMW 328i starts at US$32,400, although that lacks leather, premium sound, and a few other things on the Aero.  Even similarly equipped, the Saab 9-3 Aero is in the same ballpark price-wise as the 328i.

Wow, I'm quite surprised by that.

CSX-S. Nice car, silly price.

If Nav were optional, and price came in about $1500-2000 above the Civic Si, then maybe.

I'll give you that the Volvo is an okay car, just overpriced.  I won't agree for the Saab, Jag, the two Suzukis, the Land Rover, or the Legacy 2.5i.  There's a big difference between "overpriced" being one of a dozen faults and it being the only fault.

City Golf and Jetta. Palming off old junk on us instead of just selling the current gen cars at a sensible price.

I agree--especially considering that they're not appreciably cheaper than their new competition (Civic, Lancer, etc).

You know what?  I gotta say it.  Toyota Matrix.  Boomy engine, noisy, slow, terrible visibility outside, side airbags aren't even optional in Canada, and it's not even cheap.

But GM bought Daewoo almost a decade ago..  it's really a korean designed GM, not Daewoo anymore..

By that reasoning, Rolls-Royce is a German car, not a British car, right?  Same with Mini?  I don't buy it.  If it's got a Korean badge and it's designed in-house by members of a Korean company, it's a Korean car in my book, not an American car.  I don't care if Daewoo is a subsidiary of some other corporation.
