...but the primary beauty is in what lies beneath the hood.

I'll take the TT 300 hp unit versus the 235 hp unit of the e46 anyday... even if it means I have to give up a bit of the sexy stylin'.

How about this, given the price of a 135i, one can get a CPO E46 M3? Anyhoo, styling is subjective. Some people have better taste than others. Otherwise we'd all be driving Neon SRT4.

I do recall reading the BMW 1 Series is built on the E46 platform.

No it isn't.   It is its own  1-series platform.

True indeed x 2. And the E46 M3 looks even better.... Drool x 10 (my favorite looking car of all time). But how many were not abused by previous leasors?...  Undecided

Everyone seems pretty torn about this thing.  I for one think it'll be great car, but I can certainly be considered a bit of BMW fanboy (not as bad as my bro or Jeff Wink ...but somewhat)

Styling:  The 3 Coupe is definitely better looking.  No question.  But I don't think it's ugly.  Especially with the standard M package on the 135i, it looks fairly nice.  And please, the Impreza owners questiong the cars looks???  hahaha...I realize an imprezza is cheaper, so compare the STi I suppose.  Still ugly to me, but I know what it can do...and that makes it beautiful.

Performance/Weight:  This car is NOT a track car.  Why would anyone think it is?  Who in their right mind would spend $45-$50k on a track car unless they were loaded and buying a weekend toy, which the 1er is certainly not.  It's sport coupe not a sports car.  Performance on par or "slightly" better than the 3 coupe, but for less money.  That equation fits nicely into my situation.  I have no kids, I want a nice, fast car, but I have no intention of racing it.  Regardless of all of BMW's marketing crap about the 2002, the cars aren't even remotely related in terms of their intended demographic.

Competition: Sure you can buy nice CPO cars for similar or less, but that's true of every car, so I don't see how the 1er is different in that regard.  The closest competitor I see to the 135i is the A3 3.2.  A GTI is FWD and little downmarket, and the STi and Evo are intended as much more raw sports cars (crap interiors, amazing performance).  The A3 3.2 is very similar in it's luxury and size.  And that thing costs about $45k when you build one, so having the TT 3.0 engine plus other goodies (6 pot brakes, etc) seems decent at $45-50k (not outstanding).

Bottom Line: I think it'll be a great car for it's intended purpose (i.e. not the track).  I'll definitely look at it in a year or so, when it's time to buy.  If that makes me a poseur or my tires squeal at 150km/h around a hairpin turn...so be it Smiley

When spending $40,000+ on a vehicle, I won't buy a used one, regardless of its value or appeal.

CPO M3?  Nah, I'd like a little torque, servicability and SOME reliability thankyouverymuch.   Grin Wink

Evil_twin, buying something like the EvoX or STI and expecting it to serve practical 4-season pedestrian duty AND be able to hit the track with aplomb on the weekends doesn't sound like too much to ask.  My next car will be expected to be more practical (ie. come carrying capacity for people and stuff); safe; comfortable and also enjoyable for my periodic ventures to the AutoX course or track days.

GD,

I completely agree.  But my point is the 135i is not a track car first.  It's a "sporty luxury coupe" (I'm an engineer, not a marketer Tongue), so all this talk about the heavy weight is silly.  Of course it's heavy!  It's loaded with a meaty chassis, lots of sound deadening, luxurious appointments in the cabin, etc.  It can definitely be used out on the weekend track, but not to compete with true track warriors....

...unless of course you're gutting the thing, getting a Vishnu tune, light weight wheels, much better tires (non RF), blah, blah, blah...

...but at this point you might as well of bought that used porsche or Z06.

p.s. Is it really ugly? http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2299

Ooh, it's nice in blue.  The 1-Series coupe's aesthetics have been hurt by the fact that essentially all promo photos I've seen are an orangey-red.

Noooo  I think that Saf's mate had one of the  real original Lotus Elites( fragile cars those) 'cos I think that the Safster is no spring chicken  and dates back to REAL Colin Chapman Lotii.

If he asked for assistance in getting his Elan on the road I bet some of us would volunteer.....
