I would like to know what Yap was smoking prior to driving the 135i...especially as most journalists that went to the press drive commented on the porky weight, uninspired dash and interior and (drum roll!) that now famous understeer issue associated with the lackluster steering response.

Thankfully he gave us HIS review of the vehicle and not 'most journalists' review. Otherwise what's the point?

A comparison shot of the 135i with an E46 3-series.

More here: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2161

The more I look at the 1-series, the more it looks clownish to me. It's tall, not wide, short (lenght wise)... seems to portray an ungainly stance.

 I Agree

I'm usually not a fan of huge wheels, but somehow the 18 inchers on the 135i look positively puny. I think it's because of the massive slab sides on the car. That and the tiny, gunslot side windows make for a very awkward profile, IMO.

Objectivity over swooning over marketing BS would be in order...for entertainment value, may I suggest the comments regarding this vehicle over at the Pistonheads site.

Weight is an issue.
See BMW's response:
BMW Concept 1 Series tii
You have to go to BMW German website and check under news or google search the web
I am guessing 150-200Kg less weight 500-10000 more money.
If they build it!!!

How 'bout here? There's a bit of distortion from the wide-angle lens that probably doesn't help matters, but man, is that ever  Tongue  Tongue  Tongue.

...but the primary beauty is in what lies beneath the hood.

I'll take the TT 300 hp unit versus the 235 hp unit of the e46 anyday... even if it means I have to give up a bit of the sexy stylin'.

I would rather BMW sell us the dated E46 with the 300 HP and the ugly thing beside it.

Styling and beauty are in the eye of the beholder, why is everyone getting so bent out of shape about styling?? Some will love it, some will hate it.  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Trunk deck is a tad chopped, the lights look like they should be further rearward. In a way that's what will give it unique charm. Oh and I prefer the chrome window trim. Otherwise beaut.

It seems to be a common trend on this forum.  Just do a search for "Caliber SRT-4" Wink

Correction - I'm getting bent out of shape over the obscene weight and lackluster handling. I'm merely nauseous over the styling.  Wink

Well, Snowman is clearly bent out of shape with his less than polite comment. Not everyone thinks the Subie he drives is so good looking either, but many of us are too polite to call it an "ugly thing". Geez.

SiRCivic - I find it interesting you can comment as to the effect of the weight and handling until you driven it. I couldn't do that, but I guess I'm weird in some way.

Sure is a fun site this morning, Everyone have too many beers with their old military friends over the weekend.

Haven't driven many BMWs that I didn't like, or styling, for that matter, don't even mind the Bangle styling either.

That's the beauty of it. Nobody owns one of these things yet, so whose feelings could possibly be hurt by calling it the fugliest thing on four wheels? I promise I'll stay politely quiet when the first forum member posts pics in Show and Shine.  Grin

As for the weight, there's no arguing with Sir Isaac. Sure, the geniuses at BMW may have done a stellar job of masking the weight (although the first reviews suggest this may not be the case), but there's still no question that a lighter car makes for a sportier car, all other things being equal.

Glad you said "art college" because if you would have said you went to charm school, I would have called you a liar.  Grin

It's OK to have an ugly car if you don't pay a lot for it? MMmmmm, I'll have to remember that one.  Wink

Haven't driven many BMWs that I didn't like, or styling, for that matter, don't even mind the Bangle styling either.

Looks used to be quite important to me when selecting a car... *everything* on that car needs to be "good enough" for me; if I like everything about a car but not the tail-lights for example, well, it doesn't go on my final list. Same way about furniture, etc. Drives my better half nuts.

Anyways, although they are still very important to me, like reliability, the driving pleasure aspect is most important to me now, and overrides those things, as long as they're "ok". I'm warming up to the 1 series even though I'm not a fan of its looks. It's cute and not bad in itself, but I find the 3-series coupe so much better. We'll see how it feels in the driver's seat though.  Smiley

BMW is NOT VW (thank god), so re-hashing old models that should be left for dead is not something I expect BMW to be doing.

He who drives an Impreza has no right to speak ill of other cars' styling.   Kiss Grin  Art school indeed -- back in the days when vinyl 'wood' paneling was all the rage in car styling.  Sheesh.   Shocked
