Who here actually bought their car from a US private seller?
« on: October 31, 2007, 01:28:48 pm »
well, i always find better deal in forums compare to dealer, but i am thinking of the degree of dificulties.

1: procedure to deal with the seller?
2: how the private seller going to get a "re-call" letter? I think only dealer can get that for you?
3: sending documents / ownership to the boarder 72 hours prior, any difficulties here?
4: payment, i know i can sent bank draft, certify cheque, money order, etc, but i mean, if i am the seller, i would want to hold 5 days to make sure the money is in my pocket before i let go the car.

anybody here actually bought one from a private seller, please share your experience!

Thanks  ;)

(1) and (4) should be the same as with a local Canadian seller.  Go see the car, get it checked out, if you like it, buy it.  The owner can get the recall letter simply by asking a dealer to get it, I believe, and you can fax the appropriate paperwork to the border yourself once you have it.  The only difficulty is leaving the car somewhere for the three days (closer to a week now I here, because customs are so busy!)...  but if the seller is a reasonable person, should be no problem.

I've just completed the purchase, on eBAY  of a Lexus LS 430 from a dealer in N Jersey. It took six weeks of waiting for all the N.J Canadian and Quebec paperwork and inspections to be completed.
I saved 17-20K dollars, the dollars being at par at the time.
My advice is to buy an almost new car and pay a car-importer to do all the work. Ebay your car of choice and see what I mean.
Lexus having such a reputation, I took a little chance by not going to see it in situ, but many sellers are within a few hours of our border. Incredible car, the Lexus. Buy an 04 for 30K US, add the fees, taxes, etc, and it's on your driveway for less than 40k .
Then access you local Lexus dealer's lists and have a laugh to yourself!

If you were a customs official, would YOU believe the "gift" story?  ???  If so, I have a lovely bridge from Vancouver Island to Japan that I am willing to sell you at a drastically reduced price.

He could be just referring to the dealership selling his car to friend (the US resident). Obviously he would still have to pay taxes when he hit the border.

If so, there would be no need for the "gift" scenario. Try that and you'll be at the mercy of Customs Canada to determine just how much the car is worth for taxes, duty, etc. If they really didn't believe the "gift" story I'm sure they could investigate further and then charge you with god knows what for trying to defraud them.

I didn't .. but this guy did.. interesting stats at the end on the number of people contacting RIV.. I think this whole importing of slightly used vechiles is going to be huge while the $ is high, the savings are substaintal..
