So, I think we have decided on a new vehicle  :)

The Accord has racked up 330K and, while still dead reliable, it is showing its age. We will hang on to the Accord for the time being and use it for in-town (Toronto) duties.

We are looking for something that is comfortable, has style, is reliable, has room for stuff, and AWD for less than $20K.  Just kidding about the last part. We decided on an SUV/crossover type vehicle and started test driving just about everything:

07 and 05 4Runner – liked the style, utility, capability, but not the overall size (too high for our garage)
07  Highlander – like it from the outside, but the inside is quite dated. Just didn’t do it for us, but primarily from a styling perspective
07 Rav4 – rented this for a week in Florida. Likely has enough room, but the interior is bland and road noise was unacceptable.
07 and 04 Pathy – liked it quite a bit, but the 07 rear seats don’t actually fold flat, so that was a complete deal breaker. The 04 did feel comfortable enough and the trucky ride was pronounced
07 Pilot – not inspiring
07 CRV – too small
07 Acura RDX – too small and there is something about the styling that appears off. Its ass is too big for its wheels and it looks bottom heavy
07 LR2 – liked it quite a bit, but my wife didn’t like the ride
07 X3 – loved the ride and handling, nicely appointed, but you pay for it. And pay, and pay.
06 Jeep GC – liked the ride, and with some options, it is a really sharp vehicle. However, the 4.7 is not particularly stirring, and the Hemi is just too much. The CRD was a consideration, but the premium they are asking would pay for a lot of fuel.
07 Explorer Limited – took this as a rental for a few days. Quite liked the ride (sedate) but the seating position was weird and didn’t quite fit me.
07 GMC Acadia – quite liked this vehicle. Nicely appointed, really quiet, nice road manners. However, it is huge and won’t fit into the garage.
07 Santa Fe - my wife said no. 'nuff said.

So, it looks like we have narrowed it down to an MDX. Since I don’t love the styling of the 07s (what is it with “the shield”?) and it is damn pricey, I think we are aiming for a 2004 to 2006 vehicle. 2005 appears to be the best bet at this point. We test drove an 04, and were pleased with the comfort, quiet ride, decent performance, and roominess.

I am looking to put this to bed by year’s end, so there will be some shopping to do in the next while. There is also the matter of US vs. Canadian sourcing, and I will have to make a decision on pros and cons on that issue too.

Any ownership experiences (MD?) or other comments?
 :)

Accordingly - personally, I think you have made a decent choice, but for me, I quite like the new '07 (now '08) MDX and that would be my choice in the SUV/Crossover area. The previous gen MDX is certainly a capable machine and I'm sure MD in Calgary will offer his comments shortly as he owned an '04 for several years. I love the styling of the new one plus the 300hp engine.

Course a lot of folk will now offer a whole slew of other vehicles to add to your already long list on ones you have tried and rejected for various reasons.  ;) ;)

Good on ya.  :)

We had the 2004 MDX with the tech package.  We put about 70k on it in almost 4 years.  We were extremely impressed with the car's creature comforts.  The front and 2nd row seats have lots of shoulder and leg room.  The leather had a good quality soft feel and stood up well.  We enjoyed the in city power of the vehicle as passing and cruising were both a snap.  Quiet but when stomped on to pass, it was a breeze.  I did notice highway passing power a bit lacking though.  The low end grunt is gone when the RPM rises and it does have to huff a bit to get the acceleration going.

The car felt solid with no creaks or rattles in the 4 years.  It can fit 5 easily with room for luggage.  Maintenance was just routine/scheduled stuff with nothing major.  We had the brake TSB done and we had a rattle in the subwoofer panel.  Both were fixed and no issue occurred with either.

The driveline was solid.  Suspension is another issue.  Tuned for luxury, this car does lean in corners.  However, bumpy roads were soaked up with little harshness transmitting into the cabin.  I found braking performance a bit disappointing as it did take some distance to stop.  Pedal feel was okay but I've always thought Honda had subpar brakes.  The projector headlights were okay but I was disappointed with no HID's for a $60k vehicle.

Overall, we really enjoyed our time in the MDX.  Capable all season vehicle with the ability to move people around even in inclimate weather.  Lots of room inside (but the sloping rear window does take some capacity away) for people and cargo.  The inside was well appointed (but had cheesy plood) and has a classy design.  It doesn't have the Pilot versatility and cubbies but there is storage there.  The Bose system was okay, nothing to write home about and holds nothing to the Mark Levinson system in the Lexus.  Did not like the changer under the seat (05 and up models had in dash changers).

Wife is a Subaphobe, so unfortunately that is out. No amount of counselling, or plain coercion, appears to make her change her mind.

Lexus is a good suggestion, and I don't have any real objection or reason why it hasn't been considered. It just hasn't, probably because there is some underlying lack of appeal. I'll get one when I turn fifty or turn into a Rosedale matron ;)

A 07' Santa Fe, or a 08 tribeca, imported from the US. :)

I added the SF to my OP...I quite liked it, but while I was initially quite taken with the overall package, I have found that they are getting a little too common and the styling is no longer that appealing to me  (not that the MDX is any rare bird)

Audi Avant?  Used Audi All-Road?

God, don't get me started. I love those cars, but reliability and quality concerns, especially since I am looking at used vehicles, rule them out.

We had the 2004 MDX with the tech package.

Thanks for the detailed review. From what I have read, the MDX repesents pretty much what we are looking for. I agree with the horrible, horrible wood grain. I'd have to shell for an 06 to finally get away from it. Funny how the 04s still had cassette players plus the CD changer...yikes! 8-track still an option, anyone?

08 Volvo XC70, Caddie SRX, Mazda CX7?

Volvo is too expensive, but lovely to look at. Caddie is interesting, never really considered it. Mazda interior just doesn't do it for me.

Apparently, only 'high end' cars have cassette players.  That's what a sales guy told me a while back.  I asked if he knew where any rich guy could go to get a cassette tape.....

Canadian Driver did a used vehicle review on the All-Road and said it was surprisingly reliable with few problems.....Is there evidence somewhere else of the reliability (or lack of) of these?

Like any used vehicle purchase, reviews don't mean much and PO care and maintenance records are more important.  With a Euro car, the risk just seems to be a bit higher.

Perhaps I am mistaken (since I haven't researched the all road), but since this may be a US purchase, I feel more comfortable with an Acura. With Audi, I would want a full warranty and would be tempted to lease instead of purchase. Besides, we are looking at a crossover/SUV and not a wagon. Nonetheless, Audi remains in the running for a future purchase. The distant future.

It's called exclusivity. Maybe there is an elite, invitation-only shop in Yorkville that caters only to rich, cassette-tape buying guys. You just gotta know where to go  ;)

Lemme know, I'll get you in... :rofl2:

I'm no longer part of the club.  The Odyssey and the 911 both don't have tape decks.....the Porsche came with from the factory but that was many moons ago.  I'm a commoner.

Don't worry; I'll still read and answer your posts.  As an owner of a cassette deck equipped car, I have to do something for the lower classes. :run:
