Canadians: Stop buying cars!!
« on: October 25, 2007, 08:50:10 am »
Hi Everyone!! :)

I hope you're OK.

Quite seriously - can you think of even ONE Canadian [including yourself] who absolutely MUST buy a new car this week OR this month or for the remainder of this year? Wouldn't it be great - then - if Canadians stopped buying NEW cars? I'm sure a few auto manufacturers [And dealers] would sit up and take notice if 'new vehicles sales in Canada' for November and December equalled ZERO!! But I doubt it would take that long to get some positive response. A response that would be to the benefit of all Canadians thinking of buying a new car. I love cars and have owned dozens of them. But I would feel like a FOOL if I paid $8,000 more for a new Honda Accord than someone who lives 50 miles away from me in Seattle. [Wouldn't YOU?!] If Canadians would stand up for themselves and stop confusing the term 'nice guy' with 'one who allows himself to be taken advantage of' - prices WILL come down.

Craig!! :)
It takes FAR MORE COURAGE to be KIND than it does to be CRUEL - CanadaCraig

If something like this could be pulled off, it certainly would get their attention, but with the typical Canadian malaise it probably won't happen

I will let the cat out of the bag and say that I am currently negotiating on a new vehicle for my wife. All the dealerships we have visited in the past 4 weeks have indicated to me that sales are down sharply as many prospective buyers are gun shy. I am using that to my advantage but because Subaru lowered their Canadian prices on the new Impreza the trade in value of my wife’ wagon has taken a $1500 hit. I am not pleased.

Price it out here first and then see how good your price is up there. These guys specialize in selling to Canucks and are based in Rochester. There is currently a group buy being organized on anther site worth over $500k.

A 2008 WRX five door for $24,300.  Sheesh.  If the dollar is still near parity next fall when I get out from under the big U bills, I'm going to get a WRX for less than the price of a base Impreza.
No place I'd rather be...

The base Impreza five door is $21600 plus $1500 "fcuk-you-over" fee bring the base price to over $23K.  If you want the "Sport" package, it's about $26K.  Either way, the WRX is about the same price as a base model, and a savings compared to the Sport.  Don't even begin to compare it to the CDN WRX...

www.redflagdeals.com - where everybody talks a good game, but when it comes time to put down $30K, I expect most of them will become hard to find.

I agree but don't use inflated prices to prove your point. A base Impreza is $20,600.

RFD - a nice site to stop by, check some prices, but don't think you're going to get intelligent (even mildly) conversation or debate.

Better off negotiating on your own and saving the hassle over that group buy!

I TOTALLY AGREE TO STOP BUYING ANY NEW CAR UNTIL THE END OF THE YEAR!!!!!! :popo:
Those Manf. should be forced to reduce the prices; also the stupid PDI.
ie PDI for Civic in Canada 15XX
PDI for Civic in US          675
it is totally crazy!!! >:(

Civic is made in Canada. PDI in Canada must be calculated in shipping to US and then ship back to Canada to cost that much >:(

SOMEONE SHOULD CREATE A WEB SITE W/. EVERY CANADAIAN TO SIGN FOR REDUCE THE CAR PRICES! :D

And that will happen just after every Canadian votes for the same political party.  ;) :rofl2:   And right after every Canadian learns to write grammatically.

Based on what I am hearing around here, sales are off somewhat at many dealerships as many potential buyers are well aware of the US/Canada price differences. I think many ppl are already "voting" not to buy right away, but some of us are in a position where we are committed or have to buy for other reasons.

Ok I won't buy a car this year.  But when I do I will buy it in Ontario Canada 'cos that is where I live.

I think that used car prices will be the first to drop in Canada because of the strength of the Canadian dollar.

It is relatively easy to bring in used cars (over 6 months old) and looks to be quite profitable (eg: 2007 Infiniti M35 - $30,000 in US vs. $42,000 in Canada).  It won't be long until car wholesalers start to take advantage of this and start to flood Canada with cheaper US cars.

New cars - that is a different issue altogether.

I really don't see the big deal if your wife's wagon is down in price $1500. You can save far more than this on most cars by buying in the US. The net effect is going to be your wife's car+less money for the new vehicle. Isn't the difference really the only number that counts. (unless of course you have to buy in Canada for some reason and then you have my sympathy)
