Is this a work around?
« on: October 22, 2007, 05:33:19 am »
bombardier have told US dealers not to sell new to Canadians or they will be fined.  off topic but can this apply to new cars.  My buddy just bought a new seadoo and can-am 4 wheeler from maine.  The us dealers work around was they put 5 hours on sea doo and 10 miles on the 4 wheeler and sold it to him used but charged just slightly less of the retail price.

From what my buddy told me is the dealers have a no sell new but have a sell used policy.  no used limit on used like the product has to be 6 months old or older.  Good work around - for now.

So if a car dealer has a no used policy can they just have a sales rep drive the car for 1 week and rack up 500-1000 miles and sell the vehicle as used?  Yeah I had used must be 6 months old for the warranty to be in effect but screw the warranty issue for now.

Not sure if this is happening in this case but there seem to be a lot of "used" 07's at dealers in in Maine and New Hampshire.  ;D
My first ever GM ownership experience  can best be described as   "Fool me once...."

They'll still get burnt by (tax payer supported) Bombardier. Bombardier is tracking these sales by whistle blowers.

I am under the impression that a used car is one that has been registered (i.e. title assigned). In the US example, it would have had to be registered with the applicable state's DMV, which would involve having a real owner and paying state sales taxes. So, I don't think a dealer can just classify a car as "used" without it actually having been owned. My two cents...

Not sure if it's the same in the US but in Canada the only way a manufacturer knows a car has been sold is when the dealer sends in a "RDR" (Retail Delivery Report). Manufacturer doesn't really know if the vehicle has been licensed or not.

And that's from a company that gets millions in subsidies from the Canadian tax payer. I would like our government to reprimand this kind of behavior and make it clear that this will not be tolerated.
