The base front wheel drive Escape is $24000. The base AWD is about $28000. The Japanese CUVs are have higher prices.

The comparable Subaru space wise is the Legacy which starts in the $28,000 range.

Compare those to the base Patriot AWD at $19,000. Apples and oranges.

I'll take my moeny south of the border and buy a forester for 21K!!

Thats fine but if a Forester will do what you need, then the Patriot is probably more truck than you need.  There are a lot of competitors in the Forester's market, the Patriot is a market all its own.  I am not a big Jeep fan but I will probably look at this when the Pathfinder needs to be replaced.  And I can live with a plastic/vinyl interior as it will be easy to clean.  I say well done Jeep for getting back to a vehicle that is useful off-road but also affordable.

My biggest beef is with the CVT.  Having owed a vehicle with a CVT for 4 years, I can say I didn't like the 'droning' much. Very smooth, but VERY loud.  Other than that, I think this is a great family vehicle for Jeep.

Jeep's marketing research showed that woman preferred the Compass, men preferred the Patriot so since the vehicles were identical, sans the sheet metal, it was cost effective to build both at the same plant.  This was in Wheels magazine last year when they reviewed the Compass.

I have been nervous on CVTs myself - and would like to see the technology gain a bit more maturity first before I would want to dive in. But Jeep's drive train options are sufficient enough on this vehicle to still interest me in it. I hear what you say about the demographic focus on the Compass and the Patriot. Not quite sure where the Nitro fits though. I am seeing plenty of all three on the streets lately.

No, you won't. Forester is on the RIV inadmissible list.

I don't get why Jeep has 2 vehicles that are roughly the same price...that are nearly identical? What does the Compass compete with?  Huh

Rumor was, the Compass was supposed to attract women buyers and the Patriot was supposed to attract male buyers.  In the States, both compete with base-model CRVs, RAV4s, and Rogues...but the price difference in Canada kind of puts them in a class of their own.
So - I was working from home today and for lunch my wife and I were watching the tele together and the Jeep commercial comes on that has the Patriot and Compass driving around together in a sandbox (a very cool concept for an advert, imo).

She immediately said "Oh -I really like that small silver one - it's an SUV I'd drive." You guessed it - she chose the Compass. I told her the Patriot (the 'red one') looked more 'rugged' and wasn't sure if the Compass came with Jeep's Trail Rated moniker in any trim level. She then remarked that she didn't care about being trail rated - she liked the silver car better.

Many years ago while dating (1979) we test drove a Jeep Wagoneer Limited. Gosh what a beast of a vehicle. It's been that many years for her to say that she would consider a Jeep again. Guess the marketing really is working.

most of the posts on this website would dry up quickly, my friend, if looks weren't a part of the equation when choosing a car..

we'd do ok with K cars if it was entirely a utilitarian purchase...

btw, I'd buy a subabru on quality alone... low-end american cars are UGLY and CHEAP - as in they break down easily... just have to sit in one to see how bloody cheap they are...

You want one?  I'm selling an 18-month old Legacy wagon because, despite all the "OMG SUBARU AND TOYOTA RULE AND ARE SOOOOOOO GOOD" rhetoric, I hate the damned car.

Some things don't come out about a car on a ten minute test-drive.

I already bought its replacement--the 2004 Jetta 1.8T in my signature--and I was glad to eat the depreciation hit just to get into something else.

Me and Mrs Thumb took one out for a drive this evening. Very pleasantly surprised at how much better it worked than the Caliber I drove last spring.

It was a 5 speed Sport with AWD, power windows, locks, AC and I think cruise, and an MSRP of about $22,000.

The engine was very quiet with none of the drone that the CVT in the Caliber had. The 5 speed shifter action was pretty good, with relatively short throws and accurate action. Power and torque were much better than in the Vibe, but not an all out barn-burner. The ride was much better than expected, and on the highway, there wasn't much wind or engine noise, but a fair bit of tire noise due to the M+S tires. I didn't really throw it around too much, because that's not what a vehicle like this is intended for, but it's responses were well controlled, with a relatively little amount of body roll.

All in all a very good first impression for this price range. Thumbs up

Thanks for the notes on your first impressions, and the price point seems pretty decent as well. So - what kind of reliability history does Jeep have?

My wife and I tested the four door Wrangler and when she saw the Compass she asked me "is that thing really a eep?"

Yes, I told her.

"I think I'm going to puke it's so ugly."

And that's why I love her...
