I think this is a good offering from Dodge... <snip>  I’m not sure if being Trail Rated by Dodge

It's not a Dodge. It's a Jeep.

I had one for a rental when they first came out back in March. I was surprised at how much I liked it. It had the Yes Essentials fabric seats and the interior was OK -- after all it's a Jeep, not an Escalade. It was good on the highway and had lots of room inside. I didn't notice the issue around power and didn't even realize it had a CVT until afterwards. I would really consider buying one if not for the CVT, which scares me. Nobody seems too thrilled with CVTs of any sort and I wonder why manufacturers continue to flog them.

Methinks he is trying to argue that there is still some undeniable difference between Jeep and the rest of Chrysler that continues to set it apart.  Ever since the Caliber and Avenger came out - along with the Compass -  I don't really see it anymore. Roll Eyes Tongue

Saying a Jeep is a Dodge because they're both part of Chrysler Corporation is kind of like saying that an Audi R8 is a Lamborghini because they're both part of Volkswagen Auto Group.  Yeah, somehow, they're all related, but I wouldn't talk about Lambo's new R8.

It would make a bit more sense if you had referred to the parent company ("trail-rated by Chrysler") instead of another Chrysler subsidiary ("trail-rated by Dodge").

I really like this little Jeep. If I was after new car I would put the Jeep on my shopping list for a test drive. I would take the Jeep in a Manual. The Jeep Patriot has lots of nice colours to choose from. A touch under 17K it is a good buy. It must be hurting Compass sales, because it is the same Jeep for $1000 less.  Smiley

Saw one just 20 mins ago, in a dark grey color. It looked kinda bland, but its boxy shape distinguished itself from other cars.

I don't get why Jeep has 2 vehicles that are roughly the same price...that are nearly identical? What does the Compass compete with?  Huh

Rumor was, the Compass was supposed to attract women buyers and the Patriot was supposed to attract male buyers.  In the States, both compete with base-model CRVs, RAV4s, and Rogues...but the price difference in Canada kind of puts them in a class of their own.

I've heard that somewhere too.

I'm curious, what makes the Compass more appealing to Women, than the Patriot, from say a womans perspective.

I think the Compass was supposed to look sophisticated and metropolitan, like a new CRV or a Volvo.  It's a ghastly failure, but I think that's what they were going for stylistically.  The Patriot, on the other hand, looks like an army surplus vehicle, and does a decent job at it.  Also, a cheap Chrysler interior is more forgiveable in a rugged-looking vehicle than a metropolitan-looking vehicle.

If I was running Jeep, I'd kill the Compass and just keep the Patriot.  I don't think having two sets of bodywork for the same vehicle will help sales in the end, and people seem to unanimously agree which of the two looks better.

If they decide to keep both the Compass and the Patriot, they need to make the Compass even more women friendly. Round off the corners and call it a Rogue would be about right.

The Patriot has much more appeal for it's traditional looks and I think they got that one right. Mitlov's point about people being more forgiving of an off road vehicle is spot on methinks.

However the dollars speak and which one is selling the most? I'm sure that's the one that will be kept.

if you want an affordable AWD vehicle, you can get a Subaru for the same price!

The base front wheel drive Escape is $24000. The base AWD is about $28000. The Japanese CUVs are have higher prices.

The comparable Subaru space wise is the Legacy which starts in the $28,000 range.

Compare those to the base Patriot AWD at $19,000. Apples and oranges.

Interesting to see the Trail Rated version is only available with the CVT.  Pity really as the rest sounds pretty good for a light duty off-roader.

Quote
...the Patriot is "Trail Rated" when equipped with the optional Freedom Drive II 4WD system. "Trail Rated" is a designation Jeep gives to its vehicles that meet certain demanding off-road standards, including traction, water fording, wheel articulation, manoeuvrability and ground clearance. The Trail Rated Patriot includes an all-wheel drive system that sends up to 60% of the engine's power to the rear wheels when needed and includes a driver-selectable differential lock; a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with a crawl ratio feature; hill descent control; 17-inch OWL off-road tires; tow hooks; fuel tank and transmission/oil pan skid plates; fog lamps; and full-size spare tire. The Trail Rated Patriot also has an extra inch of ground clearance (total nine inches).

We have had 2 brand-new Dodge minivans over the years, and frankly, they were fairly decent vehicles under 80,000km. Above that they were no less reliable than any other vehicle I have owned. The last one I sold to a good friend 5 years ago and he still drives it. They sure had tons of space for whatever you wanted to carry.

Sure, the interior had plenty of plastic, but I didn't find it so bad that I couldn't live with it - and besides, a damp cloth with some cleaner followed by some Armor-All seemed to work fine for me. In the end - to me this is a real Jeep priced to compete against quite a wide variety of vehicles in the marketplace - so I don't mind the plastic interior as much on this car as I would on, for example, a family sedan.

Fully loaded at $25K makes the Patriot a vehicle that I would definitely consider with other small SUV/CUV vehicles. I agree that Chrysler absolutely gets the nod for trying to play the Canadian advantage on the price-point. I even like the boxy looks - it's got that traditional Jeep feel to it.
