TOKYO (Reuters) -- General Motors Corp appears to have inched past Toyota Motor Corp in global sales so far this year as U.S. sales at the Japanese carmaker slipped last quarter, but some counts may leave Toyota in pole position.

Toyota, the world's most valuable automaker worth $190 billion -- or nine times as much as GM -- said today its consolidated global sales grew 7 percent in January-September to 7.05 million vehicles.

That was a shade short of GM's 7.06 million vehicles, which marked a 2 percent rise for the same period.

But GM's tally includes sales of vehicles built at a joint venture in China in which it holds a minority stake, cars that some industry watchers exclude.

Automotive News, a leading industry publication, said Toyota overtook its U.S. rival as the world's largest automaker last year.

The publication excluded 420,140 vehicles sold at the China venture, which is majority held by SAIC Motor Corp, from GM's sales.

Toyota's tally includes sales at minivehicle unit Daihatsu Motor Co <7262.T> and truck maker Hino Motors Ltd, in which Toyota holds stakes of more than 50 percent.

GM said last week its global sales grew 4 percent to a record 2.38 million vehicles in the third quarter, although sales in North America fell 6 percent.

America's biggest carmaker, which lost more than $12 billion in the past two years, is in the middle of a sweeping restructuring that includes cutting more than 34,000 jobs and closing 12 plants in North America.

Toyota is on its way to another year of record profits, aided by healthy sales growth in Europe, China and many emerging markets.

It's not that stories like these are particularly insightful journalism. It's the fact that two years ago these stories did not exist at all. Now we are inundated with new ones daily. The Toyoty quality backlash has been building for a while now and the recent CR ratings of the the Camry and Tundra as Least Reliable may be the tipping point. Even with a cursory scan of auto sites, it seems like people are much more willing to bang on Toyota than they used to be.

Its not easy being on top but GM has more experience at it then any other car company in the world and still continue to do just that. Be on Top. Many of the others have come close which is actually good as it keeps GM on their toes to always produce as high a qulaity vehicle as posiible. They seem to be doing it a lot lately again.  Thats why their warranty is so long as well. They are building very reliable vehicles and are not having no-wheres near the recalls or problems some of the others are. Yes they may get paid by the word Steve but they also get paid for telling the truth as well.  Smiley

The only experience that is unique to GM is that it is the only NA car company to lose more than half of it's market share and then some. If for some reason Americans find themselves paying what we do for gasoline, which is quite possible, GM will be wiped out in NA.

For Suzanne Oshry, the problem with her Camry - a set of improperly installed tires - was eventually resolved, but only by going to another dealer. Indeed, repeated efforts to get Miller Toyota, or the factory, to assist were rebuffed until TheCarConnection.com became involved. By then, said the Southern California housewife, it was too late.

 ROFL    This is a ridiculous story.  No mention of model, tire size or brand.   Tongue    Just fantasy.

This article was not about Toyota.  It was about selling advertising on a site.  No headline grabers, no readership numbers, no advertizing, no revenues.   Smiley

Least Reliable

Is that CR's exact terminology  Huh  I thought it was "predicted" reliability.  Hmmm ... that seems like a word that describes something that has yet to actually occur.  Tongue

Consumer Reports ranked predicted reliability of 2008 models based on survey results from previous years. Here are the magazine's two best and worst picks for predicted reliability in each segment:

Pickup Truck

Best: Toyota Tundra (V-8, two-wheel-drive), Toyota Tacoma (four-cylinder)
Worst: Cadillac Escalade EXT, Toyota Tundra (V-8, four-wheel-drive)

So CR is saying the 4 wheel system on Tundras are crap.  Not heard that one.  Thought their gripe was with the V8 and the 6 speed tranny.  Both the 2 wheel drive and the 4x4 share the same motors and transmissions.

Even though CR ranked 17 Toyotas in the top 30 for reliability or whatever (1 Ford, zero GMs) I think CR is just another media company trying to earn a buck.

The problem is with the front doors on the driver's and passenger's sides, rather than the van's sliding doors. When the door is open, it's supposed to be held in place by the door check mounting panel. When the part fails, the door swings freely.

Toyota doesn't consider the defect a safety issue, although a door that closes unexpectedly could be hazardous to small children. Thumbs up All auto manufacturers should study Toyota's communication techniques, they are the best at flying under the media, safety regulators & consumers radar.

That is a fact.  I've seen it.  Personally, I wouldn't buy one of those vans, but they do run forever with little maintenance.

I saw one of those 80's Toyota vans, mid engined, couple of days ago. It was in mint condition. Wow, it looked like I could tip it right over.

I know Toyota has made past claims and recall for floort mats that were blamed for gas pedal sticking over the years, but this is the 1st time I have read that the floor mats have caused the tranny hestitation problem

Date of Failure: July 11, 2007
THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HESITATES AND EXPERIENCES ACCELERATION FAILURE SINCE IT WAS A NEW VEHICLE. THEN, ON JULY 11, 2007, WHILE ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE, THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY LOST ALL MOTIVE POWER AND WAS DISABLED PARTIALLY BLOCKING A LANE OF TRAFFIC ON AN INTERSTATE. THE VEHICLE FAILED TO MOVE EVEN THOUGH THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING. THE POLICE ASSISTED AND THE VEHICLE WAS MOVED TO A SAFE LOCATION. THE DEALER SUGGESTED THAT THE RUBBER FLOORMAT MAY HAVE GOTTEN STUCK UNDERNEATH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND CAUSED THE HESITATION CONCERN. THE DEALER COULD NOT FIND A CAUSE FOR THE LOSS OF MOTIVE POWER FAILURE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 12,968. THE FAILURE MILEAGE FOR THE HESITATION ISSUE WAS 12,960. *DSY UPDATED 09/10/07 *TR

Date of Failure: September 25, 2007
I PURCHASED A 2007 CAMRY 4 CYLINDER IN SEPT 2006. THIS IS THE 6TH TOYOTA I HAVE OWNED AND IS BY FAR THE WORST REFORMING. I HAVE 8000 MILES ON THE CAR AND HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION SINCE THE INITIAL PURCHASE. THE CAR IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE AS IT PRESENTLY PERFORMS. IT SIGNIFICANTLY HESITATES WHEN ACCELERATING SUCH AS WHEN ENTERING A HIGHWAY OR CHANGING LANES ON THE INTERSTATE. THERE IS A NOTICEABLE 1-2 SECOND DELAY FROM THE TIME THE ACCELERATOR IS DEPRESSED AND THE CAR BEGINS TO ACCELERATE. IN ADDITION, WHEN IN CRUISE CONTROL, THE TRANSMISSION SEEMS TO BE SEARCHING FOR THE CORRECT GEAR WITH THE ENGINE REVVING UP SIGNIFICANTLY AS IT DOWNSHIFTS WHILE GOING UP AN INCLINE. I HAVE BEEN BACK TO THE DEALER 5 TIMES AND HAD THE NY REGIONAL TOYOTA REP DRIVE THE CAR. THE TRANSMISSION SOLENOID HAS BEEN REPLACED, AND A CORRECTIVE TSB HAS BEEN PERFORMED TWICE. I HAVE ALSO CALLED TOYOTA IN CALIFORNIA. THE CAR STILL DOES NOT PERFORM PROPERLY AND IS HAZARDOUS TO DRIVE. THE RESPONSE FROM THE DEALER AND TOYOTA HAS BEEN "THE CAR IS PERFORMING AS DESIGNED". *JB

Sure sounds like Toyota is at the top of their game with the BS dept to their customers from the stories that keep coming out. Of Course these owners all know nothing and only Steve does on the Toyota brand lineup. I know I won't be caught with a problem product by them as I will stick to  my reliable GM's as always.  It seems all the complaints I hear regarding this product line are in the last few years it seems. I drive my newest GM product which is a 1991 and can and do go troublefree every day for years even still. There's a few posters here who should take off their Rose covered glass's and see the real light for a change. Oh and yes Steve they finally won a few awards for their truck designs but not in the heavy duty work division at all. it seems.
