Have you forgotten the Japanese and Germans were trying to destroy us?   I guess my dad lied  when he told me the Germans killed six million Jews.    Cry Cry Cry Cry

Okay, as a Volkswagen-driving Jew, I'm going to tell you right now to STFU because you're being an ass.

Americans engaged in slavery with all of its crimes against humanity for nearly a century and followed that up with another century of Jim Crow.  The Japanese have an equally bloody history--just look at Nanking.  You've already covered Germany.  The British?  Maybe you should ask my Irish-American wife about them, or look at all the they did in India and the Middle East.  Koreans?  Well I don't know much about their history, but if you love dogs then you have problems.  So unless you're driving a Volvo or a Saab, you're just a pot calling a kettle black.

So Duck - that was then. This is now. Which life do you choose to live?

If it's then and you wish to hang on to the old ways and history, feel free to do so, but please step aside while the rest of us choose to go forward and forgive what was and live with what we have and can control.

The sins of the past are just that - past. Get over it and move on - please. Angry

Are you your dad's age?? Move on, the rest of the world did about 50 years ago. I would expect to hear that kind of comment in 1949 but not today. I remember the hostility of the early 50s but it is long gone, and there is no place in today's world for comments/attitudes like yours.

Basically, STFU.  snowy

At one point or another in human history every culture and race has been guilty of atrocious crimes.  That is our human history, and we need to learn from it and try not to repeat it.

The thing I can't stand about some of the comments here have to do with racism, intolerance and hate.  If you respond to racism and hate with those same things, don't we just then have more?  Hating a group because they hate you has what effect?  Twice as much hate.

I can attest that a lot of asian people in my parents generation are racists against blacks, including my parents.

However, they are wrong to be racist.

I don't appreciate being painted with the same wide brush because many people of my race make that stupid mistake. All kinds of "peoples" do stupid or evil things (of one type or another), because everyone is human and humans can be stupid or evil.

If you don't wanna buy asian cars because of that, that your choice. But to try and bring up that argument amongst us as a valid argument, that sucks big time.  Angry

Wow.  That's all you have in response?  You're not a trouble-maker, you're a troll.  EDIT:  And a racist one at that.  It's racist to attach a negative characteristic to all members of a certain race.  That still applies in my head even if the negative characteristic is racism itself.

Duck does not deserve to be banned at all. I may not like what he said but its his right in this Country to say it. Thats what my Dad and thousands of others fought for and gave their lives for as well. I don't agree with hating the people of today for the past crimes of their ancestors as thats not right at all. Where I worked in GM we had people from almost if not every country in the world with whom I enjoyed immensley working with. These were men and women of all races and colours and creeds and if they wish to speak up and state their feelings I will let them and not go off half cocked  and demand they are gone. Duck has been on this board for a long time and has never before stated anything like this at all. To me this is not the normal Duck that I have spoken with on here before. We don't live in his shoes or even know why he said such things but he is intelligent enough to know what he is saying.  To me he obviously has his reasons as only he knows why. I don't like many foreign made vehicles either but have 0000 against the folks who make them.   He is amna of colour and has probably tasted the sting of racism in his life which is a sickening thing for amy human to have to live with. My heart goes out to him to have this kind of hatred in his soul to even think these things let alone state them on here. Sad

He has the right to free speech on public property and on his own property, but nobody has the right to free speech on somebody else's property.  If I have someone over to my house, and they insult my wife, I have every right to kick them out of my house.  I'm not infringing upon their free speech rights by doing so.

This forum is the equivalent of the parlor at Wing's house.  He has the absolute right to kick anybody out for any reason, and does not infringe upon their free speech rights by doing so.

Its funny how things from 50 years ago hang on so long. I can't buy a German built vehicle if I ever want to visit my dad who is in his 80's. If I were to buy a volkswagon I would have to park a couple of miles away to visit, at least. He's holding a grudge against the entire nation over the death of some friends and a cousin at Caen and he will not Forgive ever, and what was found in the concentration camps at the end of the war, only stiffened his resolve

He doesn't hold the same level of hatred against the Japanese, and while I got some attitude when I got my first Japanese built vehicle, because they had been allied with the Germans, his Honda lawn mower, gotten just afterwards was my get out of jail free card on that.

I haven't got any complaint with the Germans and would really like to try out a BMW, GTI or a used 944, but will not just to maintain family harmony.

Psst--

The Chrysler Crossfire is built in Germany and is basically a previous-generation Mercedes-Benz SLK.  But your father doesn't need to know that.  Plus, I think Chrysler is basically giving them away.

Also, the Opel Astra is coming to the United States as the Saturn Astra.  The Opel Astra GTC, Opel's GTI competitor, is almost certain to follow the next year as the Saturn Astra Red Line.  Once again--just tell your Dad it's a Saturn.

Trust Me the old boy is up on the previous Chrysler Daimler ties and finds them all suspect now. Unfortunately the cars that I'd really like to try are clearly made by the "enemy". A BMW M3 coupe If I owned it would not make it off his drive way with out a pick axe inbedded in the hood. He might not catch on to an Astra but I can't say I want one. I talked about looking at a new mini, and he went out of his way to point out BMW is involved somewhere and how it would not be welcome. He once quit dealing with an optometrist in our town that he had dealt with for 15 years because the guy bought a BMW 318 and we drove 45 miles for eye checkups after that

I am not sure if he would consider a Lamborghini a problem, with their German corporate ties but as they are massively out of my price range I've never floated that trial balloon.

It's not rational, I know, especially in this day and age when 40 % or more of any car may come from a country other then where it was assembled but that the way it is. Dad may hold a grudge with the best of them but he does keep up on cars as he is something of a car nut  himself (he loves his GM V8's) which would make it extremely difficult to sneak something past him.

Well in that case just get a 2007 G35 sedan or 2008 G37.  Just a hair's width behind the 335i, and from what I've heard, more dynamically capable than any of the other German sport sedans/coupes.  And you've got zero German involvement.  Some indirect French involvement, but not German.

I just got a 08 lancer about 2 months ago and am enjoying it a lot. Not as much as it appears your enjoying your Jetta (based on what I just read on the auto dreams thread) but that kind of attachment is rare. Congratulations by the way on finding a car you enjoy so much. Certainly when it comes time to replace the Lancer a lot of good cars will have to be considered but till then I'm pleased with what I got.

I guess I was trying to point out with my posts here that some old opinions and hatreds take a remarkably long time to change. In view of how my Dad has since I was a child said the Germans as a nation were the devils incarnate I can see how some one could with a similar upbringing would have the same prejudices as their parents. I was lucky enough to go to school with some families with German ancestry which let me see that they were normal people like any other.
