"There's often a slip between the cup and the lip."
« on: October 12, 2007, 09:46:45 am »
Interesting article on Pg. B3 of Globe and Mail today showing Stats. Can.
chart how import car prices down 15% so far this year.
The quote from deputy chief economist at BMO Nesbitt Burns Inc.
talks about delays on retailer responsiveness and says competitive pressures like buying direct from USA required.

I still repeat that there is a political aspect of our arguements here that newer, cleaner engine technologies being adopted by Canadians is suffering a tremendous price premium (eg: Mercedes BlueTec) deliberately
by auto manufacturers policies and would urge anyone who cares to send a letter to their MP.  A parallel threat of a new LAW that would require green technolies to be priced (& packaged) more affordably vis-a-vis USA
pricing same technolies might raise some eyebrows.  Even dropping
the duties on European or Japanese technology on direct imports from those non-NAFTA vehicles paying 6.1% would be positive.
There have got to be some better ideas out there.  I'm just brain-storming here on political pressures that could be brought to bear on these companies.  And we need to think of C.A.A. and other Consumer Associations writing to their (auto Co.)Associations.

Since I started this thread then let me ask responders to focus on what actions we could encourage, what ideas might cause a reaction with the Auto Co.'s.  I for one am willing to write some letters if people could provide full address and contact details.  Would Canadian Driver want participation?  I would gladly step down, or participate at committee level
if mtg. in GTA.

The simplest one would be to own 10% of the shares in the company and insist on getting on the board.   Not a particularly cheap way of doing it tho'   ;D

OK, I have just written to Presidents of following organizations:
Canadian Driver
Consumer's Reports Canada
C.A.A. South Central Ont.
Automotive Journalists Of Canada
Assoc. of Int'l Auto Manuf.'s of Cda.
Cdn. Vehicles Manufacturers' Assoc.
Lexus Canada
CarHelpCanada

The point I make is that quick MSRP action is required or momentum on direct importation will cause significant change for a long time.
A lot of good will come unravelled.  A lot of new agents (eg:ucanimport.com) will get established.  Neighbours & peer pressure will cause a huge focus on price.  The business model will come undone.
I'm not sure any of these e-mails will cause one single thing to happen.
But I feel better expressing joint frustration these threads and many conversations I've had with others display.
We can't say we did not warn them.
Now spread the word on successful imports and the lessons for all of us.
Here's to forcing change.

A large number of the 1.6 M vehicles sold in Canada were leased last year, if current MSRP dropped a large percentage, their residual values will certainly to follow. The leasing financial institutions, mostly a sub-division of the car manufacturers, will suffer a rather large significant loss once those vehicles are returned. The smaller leasing company will have a very tough time. No incentive for them to drop prices.

The book these executives should refer to is "The Tipping Point" by Gladwell.
