1 CND = 1.02 US ...................... arghh!!
« on: October 05, 2007, 03:04:47 pm »
Well, I can go down to Seattle and buy a Brand Spanking NEW 2008 Corvette for $40,000 CANADIAN , or I can go to my local dealership and pay $69,500 Canadain.  WHAT THE FUDGE!

I read a report today that the Cnd Dollar is likely to hit 1.10 US Dollar.

How does the economy work? I don't get it? Why are people in Canada (with smaller incomes) willing to pay more for cars?

When it came to buying my NSX....I went down to the states, saved $20,000 after paying $200 for my plane ticket, taking 2 days to drive it up to BC, and after taxes and inspections.

In 2 years, if the Canadain dollar is sitting around 1.10 US we will still be paying more for cars.....I have no idea how this work?? Can some explain?

Ron, why would you need to pay duty on a Vette?  I thought if it's built in the US, it's fair game without duty?

Edit: whoa!  where'd the second post go about the Vette?!

I deleted the second post, because it was in reply to someone who had posted that it would actually cost me $70,000 to get a Corvette from the states due to me wasting my time (I don't make $15,000/day) + taxes etc.....but that person deleted their post, so I deleted mine showing savings calculations of over $30,000.

Well, I didn't pay duty on my NSX oddly enough (built in Japan); but, I read an example on a Corvette forum, and the guy paid duty on a new Z06 Corvette??

I don't know.  Duty or not, savings are over $30,000 and only going to get bigger.

As I said before, not before I get some rims....get this, it comes with stock  225/50-16, lol, my RSX has stock 17s rims.  Once I get a nice staggered 18/19 rims combo I'll throw some pics up.

My Porsche comes with 16" D90 rims....but luckily they were upgraded to 17" Cup wheels.  I know what you mean about having cheesy wheels on a car.  But at the time, 16's where huge.  ;)

Throw some up anyway, the timeless NSX always looks good, regardless of the shoes.  You don't have to be embarassed about the way it looks....c'mon....just a few.

A stock NSX is sexy.

Anyway, a man from Van Bortel Subaru in Rochester, NY, was planning a "get together" in Toronto,  and talk about importing Subaru's from the states. He had over 60 people signed up, but Subaru of Canada monitored the forum, and called up Subaru of America, and basically said WTF. So the meeting got canceled!  :bang:

Maybe SoC should have gone, "Holy :censor:, we're losing hundreds of thousands of dollars of potential sales!" and actually done something about the price difference.  With the Canadian dollar now worth more than the USD, I see no reason to buy in Canada.  Hell, depending on the car, even if you were to buy it and register it in the States, and then export it as "used" to Canada, you could save a small fortune.

I was thinking along the same lines looking at a Lexus RX350...the numbers are smaller but the savings are still 15K+

The thing that REALLY bugs me about the RX 350 is that most of them are made here, shipped to the US, and then sold for less than 75% of the Canadian price :o

Not sure about now with NAFTA but at one point in the past wouldn't that have qualified as "dumping"
My first ever GM ownership experience  can best be described as   "Fool me once...."

I have though of that, but I believe that would just raise the price in the States if they were found guilty of dumping car for a cheaper price there.
Maybe our lawyer friend could Toyota sue for dumping.  ;D

There are some dealerships in the Toronto area that sell imported cars. Canadian Auto Associates is one of them:

http://www.canadianautoassociates.com/

Many of their cars are in miles instead of kilometers.

there are dealerships here that sell US cars.  Most of them are ripoffs.  Like one dealership wants $32k for a 2005 S2000 with 32,000 miles on it.  You can buy one in california for 20-21k, bring it up here, everything factored in for 22-23k.  They want 10k more.  Screw that.

Yep....the used lots here that are loaded up with higher end US cars all seem to be trying to sell at regular old "pre $1.00CDN=1.0175US Canadian prices" and pocket the 30%+ profit margin they probably have built in. Really, who can blame them? If people don't do their homework before making a major purchase and end paying way too much who's fault is that?
