Hey, you are preaching to the wrong guy. Thirty-plus years accident and insurance claim free driving in as many years: cars, motorcycles and aircraft.

Change attitudes? Maybe less red meat in the diets and throwing the TV out the front door might help.  :rofl2:

Yeah, because Bavaria is full of vegetarians...

Maybe our excuse is bad genes then. You tell me why we drive the way we do.
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!

A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

Let me give you an example and tell me if I am right or wrong. In Toronto, there is a long delay before lights at the intersection turn green. This was 'suppose' to make sure that the intersection is clear of all traffic before cars in the opposite direction start to go. In fact, what people do is take advantage of that delay and continue to barrel through the intersection in order to 'make the light'.

On the other hand in Vancouver, there are no delays in traffic lights. Everyone knows that once your light turns red, the light in the opposite traffic direction has already turned green and cars are going to start going, so you know not to keep going through the intersection when the light is read.

Quality drivers ed. like in some European countries mentioned in this thread, should be mandatory and the law. Right now, you can be taught to drive by anyone ...or no one and still take a test and pass.  I think that the key goes back to better driver education. Let's get serious about it. I think it is a good option.

By the way, when I drove in Vancouver through a residential street and there was no sign at the intersection you had better believe that I slowed down and made darn sure there was no one barelling through the other way :)

Considering the fuss here in Ont about the every two years emissions test and what a cash grab that is I wonder how the public will respond to a more expensive learning to drive and driving test.... badly I bet.   No political points there.

IMHO to make it work you'd probably have to retest everyone and that would take years and cost a fortune and :censor: people off... even less political points there.

So it wont happen.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

You are probably right, but it would be a great idea. It's too easy to 'adapt' to our rules and then ignore them because of prior training when the test has been passed.

Everyone should be on the same page and know the same rules and be tested the same way. And to really make the point offer training in only English or French so that people wanting a licence must have one or the other to qualify. Signs are in either language so training should be as well. This way testers would know people understand the rules.

And every three to five years there should be retraining. Updating if you prefer to ensure people are instructed in the rules that might have changed or been modified. Build it into the cost of the licence - I have no problem with that IF I WANT TO DRIVE!. A choice. You don't want to be a driver, fine, don't take the test.

OHhhh be still my bleeding heart  :brkhrt:  So how did people respond to mandatory vehicle emissions testing in Ontario......they do it...and pay for it. There have been  postive changes to it since its inception, such as newer cars don't need testing. Furthermore....it helps the environment.

Oh and Toronto's mayor wants to put a tax on car's too...No political points but.....guess what....the mayor wants the tax  and it is going to pass and people will pay for it ...why ??? 'cause they love to drive their cars :)

I still slow down even if the cross street has stop signs at both sides, especially when my sight distance is limited.

And every three to five years there should be retraining.

As a past flight instructor, I was tested every year by Transport Canada. They'd go over your past years records and see where your students that you've recommended for a Private Pilot's Licence (or Commercial PL) were weak, and test you on those lesson plans/exercises. If there were no weaknesses, they'd randomly pick out a few lesson plans/exercises and check you out.

I dont see how removing stop signs will make it safer for pedestrians.

Pedestrians in a walk-sign-filled environment stop looking at cars and only look at signs.  I have seen some incredibly oblivious pedestrians crossing streets with the evident attitude that "if I don't see a red hand, it must be OK to cross."  Even in a marked crosswalk with a walk sign you should be watching for right turners and left turners (with their thick A-pillars!) and U-turners and people pulling out of parking spaces and red-light runners... but no, they're just looking at that little white walk sign, and they'll step in front of a bus to obey it.

we should take after europe and eliminate cross walks. no overhead crosswalk lights, or push buttons or flashing yellow lights. Just an area marked with white stripes on the road where pedestrians can cross if it is safe for them to do so.
