From the article?
"Canada's currency, nicknamed the loonie after the image of the national bird on the one-dollar coin"

I didn't know the loon was the national bird.

Does that mean the beaver is the national rodent,
the moose and squirrel, and the polar bear are the national mammals?

A quick google of "canada national bird" reveals a number of references to the Common Loon as Canada's national bird. I didn't check on the beaver or moose. :)

I followed several links (one to Environment Canada and the other to Hinterland's who's who), and neither mention it as Canada's National Bird.

However Some private sites did.

No mention of the canada goose?

Now there's a point snow/sand/golf man. How Come  Buzz Hargrove is not lambasting the last Liberal government for creating the conditions that brought the Cdn$ to parity and causing all these jobs to disappear ? Huh?  If it had not been for Paul Martin in his role as Finance minister we'd be at 50c by now not 99.9c
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Big picture and over the long run a high dollar is healthy. Relying on the low dollar to be competitive is a crutch for poor productivity. The Canadian dollar has only gone up slightly on the global scene; the American dollar is the one going down the toilet.

IIRC when he was Industry minister years ago John Manley said exactly that and was blasted from all sides. He was right, but that didn't help him much at the time.

To err is human, to blame it on someone else is even more human.

Keeping C$  artifically lower would be like subsuidizing the average US consumer. We should not do this.
