Strong loonie drives Porsche prices down

Last Updated: Tuesday, September 25, 2007 | 2:18 PM ET
CBC News

If you've been hopelessly ogling a sweet new Porsche, it's no longer quite as far out of reach.

Porsche announced Tuesday plans to lower prices by an average of about eight per cent on its 2008 models to better reflect the loonie's strength.

"We cannot ignore our customers and dealers in Canada who can look to the U.S. and recognize a substantial price difference," said Peter Schwarzenbauer, president and CEO of Porsche Cars North America, Inc., in a release Tuesday.

"We listened to the market and did what is best for our customers in Canada."
Porsche's 2008 Cayenne Tiptronic is now priced at $59,400; the 2006/2007 manufacturer's suggested retail price was $64,300.

The Canadian dollar reached parity with the U.S. greenback for the first time in almost 31 years on Sept. 20. Since then, it has hovered a little under parity. U.S. retailers have reported a boom in business, while Canadian consumers have complained that retailers at home haven't changed sticker prices to reflect the current exchange rate.

In particular, some car shoppers have crossed the border to purchase vehicles, saying even with duties and taxes, U.S. prices are notably lower.

But industry analyst Dennis DesRosiers last week released a report suggesting cross-border car shopping may not save consumers much money as Canadian prices in certain segments have fallen. He also noted Canadian dealers have been offering aggressive incentives, lowering the difference further.

Still, U.S. auto sales to Canadians have climbed significantly as the dollar has gained strength, with sales last year exceeding 65,000 — an increase of 50 per cent over the previous year, according to the Registrar of Vehicles operating under Transport Canada.

It's still cheaper to get a US car.....but it's a good start.  Let's hope the other Canadian headquarters follow suit.

At least Porshe is trying.  Better than nothing.  But if you can still save thousands I'd still have to go to the US.

Looks like things might actually be changing because of the strong loonie.

But what's the price differential between Canada and the US?  I'll bet more than 8%.  So while a nice sounding move, it's still not enough.  Wasn't there a thread on here not long ago about the average profit on a Porsche being nearly $30 000?

Porsche has done something to help with the price differential.  However, the broad view of this is that car pricing isn't just based on a simple exchange rate.  There are other factors.

The Porsche cars are discounted a bit for Canadians and they are still cheaper in the US.....no question about that.

It kind of makes sense that Porsche might feel pressure (from their dealers to do this.)

We are talking expensive "low volume" cars here. It would make sense to me that a lot of Porsche clients would have the $ to ignore financing through Porsche Canada programs unlike say Subaru where buyers are more likely to need the low rate incentive financing there is one barrier down. If you have the $ to get a Porsche you are more likely to travel to the US I would think.

From the dealer side if you lose 3 sales of Legacy's this month out of your total volume (I'm making up numbers) of 100 you can live with it. You lost maybe 6 K in profit.

if you are a Porsche dealer and you lose 3 sales out of the 10 cars you sell a month you just lost 90K in profit and 30% of your sales. Any dealer is going to squawk about that.

Kudos for going that route (yes they could have done more but they could have done much less rather than simply cutting off US sales to Canada or warranty support. It certainly makes them LOOK much better.

This is good news, however, it is still far cheaper in the US.  We're probably going to look to the US to replace ours (buy instead of lease), the price difference is just too great.

Shouldn't the US prices be INCREASING to reflect their low dollar? I haven't seen anyone mention that anywhere..Slightly OT - I apologize

Yes. Porsche claim to price in Euros only so the FOB Germany price should rise when expressed in USD.  probably what happens is that Porsche USA makes less money.

I find it interesting that Porsche would be one of the first to do this, but one has to think that people who buy these cars know a thing or two about financials, coupled with dealers pressuring HQ.

If you've been hopelessly ogling a sweet new Porsche, it's no longer quite as far out of reach.

This is all that I needed to go for that new Carrera over the VW Golf TDI I was considering.  ;)
What you won't find in my car is a coffee, cigarette and a cell phone. What you will find is a driver; imagine that, a driver in a vehicle. What an effing concept!

A car has to do more than just perform; it has to stir your soul!

A true driver's car does not have cup holders.

Porsche is the most profitable car brand in the globe. They turned a shitty bad design that has changed little over the decades and keep reselling it over and over and over again. So retooling is minimal. They just market the myth of the badge very well that caters to the Jay Z crowds. That's all.  :hurl:

Sorry! Sorry! Sorry! I love you Porsche!!!!

Hey, between now and this morning, they've posted the latest prices.

But the Carrera GT isn't listed. I guess I'll just have to settle for the GT3 RS. I don't get no respect!

I believe they stopped making the Carrera GT.....the new 997 GT2 will be a beast and run some incredible numbers.  Price included.
