Agree. Most of the comments on most BMW chat sites is of a "dislike this idea" nature. And traditionally hatchbacks have not sold well in the US, they sell OK in Canada but our market is too small to be meaningful.

What does BMW top brass know that the rest of us don't...??

Well we have family members on the forum who picked up an M6 and 535 at the same time, followed shortly after by a 135.

True, but tpl was talking of picking them up in Munich, at the BMW Welt. It is quite an experience, according to various reports I have read.

My friend also said it was cheaper to do an ED in the states, then to just pick up in the States

That is correct, but I do not have figures to back it up. US buyers taking ED get a price break on the vehicle, which is (IIRC) about the amount that one would spend going to Munich to get it. Most US ED buyers consider it their "free vacation".

For Cdn ED buyers, there is no saving over picking it up at the local dealership. All prices still the same, but you get the fun of picking up your car in Munich, and driving it to whichever port you chose among the available choices. Don't know why the US guys get the better deal.

The point of ED is indeed the experience of going to BMW itself.

Financially, the idea is to combine the pickup with a vacation and save the car rental.   BMW provide insurance for 2 weeks free IIRC and that can be extended cheaply for up to a total of 6 months...which is as long as the  tax free plates last.   A months worth of car rental in Europe for a BMW class vehicle is not cheap.

AND you get to break in the new car properly.


@AirB    It used to be that if you were away with the car for a month or two ( plus shipping time) that Canada Customs then said it was a 2nd hand car and you got a break on the import duty. AFAIK that went away some years ago, maybe when the GST was introduced or maybe at FTA time ... don't know.

Whether or not you like the BMW X6 (and the X5 for that matter), no doubt there will be some hot editions of both these coming our way soon as both the X5 and X6 are going to be "M"ed:

A X5 M might have some interest for me in the future (not the X6 tho, couldn't even fit the big dog in the back area with seats up). For that matter, I assume the next X5 will have the new 4.4L TT V8 in it, additionally, that engine will show up some time in the upcoming new 5 Series, due out as a 2011 MY.

Well yes but.... this section is the ovr50 and his nth BMW. Which at about post #1500 we'll want to fold into the Fall 2010 photography thread of ovr50s adventures in Euland with his new car... and so on.
