Our brand-new Nissan Versa
« on: September 16, 2007, 06:59:16 pm »
Well, I sure didn't expect this. I thought a Mazda5 was in our future, but the dealer in Kelowna didn't have the model we wanted and was very aggressive in trying to make us buy a loaded GT which we didn't want. We walked out of there after wasting an entire morning, which really pissed me off.

Next we tried a Kia Rondo, but I hated the bolt-upright driving position. We ended up buying a car we hadn't even considered, a Nissan Versa S hatchback with A/T (the wife insisted... :() and the value-added package. We got a much better offer for our trade-in and got a new car for a very good price optioned exactly the way we, I mean the wife, wanted. I'm amazed at how good small cars have become, but I'm sure gonna miss that old Neon.... ;D

Photos out of nowhere - I didn't even know (or had forgotten) that you were even looking for a car. Wasn't that long ago you were showcasing the Neon and we were commenting on how shiny she was. EDIT: You mentioned trading in your first post there, must have missed it.

Well, if wife is happy you'll be too. I'm sure buying the Versa saved you significant money and it's a really great value for such a well rounded small car. Congrats!

Had you considered the Caliber at all? I much prefer the Versa but wondering since you had the Neon.

I think that's a great car. If I were looking for a compact but roomy car, with versatility, fuel economy, and great value for dollar, I would pick that car. Too bad it wasn't available earlier, I probably would have bought one before.

Congratulations!

What's in the value-added package?

Thanks, sirA.
We rented a Caliber a few months ago and didn't like anything about it, from it's wannabe-SUV styling to it's really cheap-looking interior. Unlike my Neon, it rattled like a can full of marbles, although it drove well enough. We didn't like the high sills and tiny windows which made outward vision difficult, with blind spots the size of Alaska. For the same price, the Versa is a just as well if not better-equipped and more sophisticated ride.

Thank you, Julie. It's actually called the Value Option Package, and it includes A/C with microfilter, remote keyless entry, power windows/mirrors/door locks, etc., just enough to raise the Versa above the bare-bones category. ;D

Can anyone but me remember when only Caddies and Benzes had power windows? :o ;D

Looks good, it's a nice color. My parents got their Versa from the same dealership back in January. Seems like a good outfit. The car itself has been solid, no problems, and they like it a lot.

When I drove it I thought the same as you, it's amazing how far small cars have come. Doors close with a solid 'thunk', quiet on the highway, big comfy seats, etc. OEM tires not so good in the winter though, at least when braking.

Congrats on your new car.  I'd say you've made a wise decision.

Having only sat in a Versa, I'm impressed with it, and it's easily my fav of the current small cars.

Good call.  The Versa, from what I've heard, is a very competent small car.  Not as agile as a Fit or as fuel-efficient as a Yaris, but more solid, roomy, and powerful than just about any other subcompact out there.  And you can't beat five-door practicality.

It looks classy, too.  It's one of the only subcompacts whose aesthetics don't make me wrinkle my nose (no offense to any Fit and Yaris drivers, it's just my personal tastes).

EDIT:  After looking at pictures, I also have to say that the Versa has the nicest-looking interior I've ever seen in a Nissan.  How's the quality of interior materials?

Congrats! Thats a very nice color.  :)

I like the styling of the Versa, but I don't like the rear end of the hatch. I don't know why.

:) Thanks, Mitlov. One of the first things I noticed about the Versa after I opened the door was the quality of the interior. There are cushy soft-touch materials on the doors and armrests and the plastics look and fit better than anything this side of a Lexus. There are a few surprising touches like the damped motions of the swiveling passenger-assist handles and even the glove box door! Instead of dropping and whacking my knee like I expected, it just glided open - very impressive. And it's huge - even bigger than the one in my brother-in-law's Grand Caravan. All the controls have a very high-quality look and feel solid. I can't really see anything that shouts CHEAP at all. Aside from a few quibbles like the lack of a standard armrest/console bin between the front seats and rather dim interior lighting there isn't much to complain about here. When I showed the car to my neighbours, they all commented on how good the interior looked. Nobody said that about my Neon and in terms of today's dollar the price was almost identical, so it's really quite amazing how far these small cars have come in the last few years. :o ;D

I'm amazed at how good small cars have become...

Amen to that, brother!  And the Versa is possibly the most formidible example of just how far sub-compacts have come.  I raved about the Versa elsewhere on the forum and was astonished not only by the size (and fit n' finish) of the interior, but also just how smooth, quiet and peppy it was to drive too.  THIS is considered an 'entry-level' car?  And to be able to get the cool bells n' whistles on it too at a reasonable price?  Well done, Nissan.

Congrats on a great choice!

PS... that glovebox is mammoth.  For those who haven't seen it, to put it into perspective, you can reportedly fit a normal-sized laptop computer in there!  Having reached into it myself, I believe it!
