The dealer group I work for has dealerships across the country. Chrysler, subaru, hyundai, mitsubshi, nissan and toyota. Over 19 dealerships in total. It is also the only publicly traded dealer group in canada. Toyota for some reason does not allow the dealer group to have any info posted on the dealer group web site. They also will not allow the dealer groups emblem[for lack of a better word] to be put on business cards or the trunk decal.

Actually in Metro Halifax all the dealerships  I think are owned by one of 3 groups.

Steele group

Oregan's group

MacPhee Group.

City Mazda may be the lone hold out?

Quite common in Montreal.  There are a few such groups, with some being quite large.  Below are 3 of the better known ones:

Single dealership operations are the exception these days.

Last time I took the wife's Civic in for maintenace, there were a couple of Bentleys in the receiving area. When I asked I was told that the owner of Calgary Honda also owns Calgary Bentley.

I wouldn't mind getting a Continental as a loaner while they change the oil in the Civic...

I can't imagine people are as happy when the opposite occurs, though  ;D

from your experience, what do you think would be the benefits and or pitfalls buying a vehicle from a dealership that is group owned as compared to an independent dealership.

There really would be no benefit from buying from a dealership that is part of a dealer group unless that group passes the savings onto you . Dealer groups benefit themselves. They can buy cars, parts, advertising at a discount.

As a consumer less competion is bad.

If the same group owns Honda, Toyota Subaru and Hyundai as long as you don't have the desire to drive outside your local area to buy a car they know they will sell you a car (if you car say shopping Corrola, impreza,Civic etc) No point in trying to play the dealer in dartmouth against the one in halifax because the group will still get your business.

We have one GM dealership in London that owns about 8-10 of the other dealers lots in town but not the business's in them. We also do have a GM dealership who does have 3 outlets in london but are operated by them. One is the 2nd Caddy Hummer dealership in Canada actually. Very nice place indeed with a totally new building in a fancy area as well.  :)
