Took the short drive to Wuffalo on Saturday to do a bit of shopping. I think the merchants at the Galleria have quickly clued in to the vast numbers of Canadians who have infested their mall. The "sale" prices for the most part were not so good. I bought a pair of shoes (the same pair is about $35 more in Canada) and my wife got a nice pair of boots, but otherwise, there was nothing so spectacular a deal that we just had to have it. In fact, I deliberately held back thinking for the sake of an extra few bucks, it's worth not having to sweat at the border wondering if I'm going to have to wait in lineups to pay a pitance of duty on my measly purchases.
As it happened, I didn't have to. Our $150 total apparently was too small for the border guard to worry about and he happily waved us on our way.
I will say this: I've never been so ashamed to be a Cdn. The number of times I heard the ignorant hill-billy masses (must've been from Sodsbury or something

) arrogantly exclaim their disgust in the fact that the retailers weren't accepting Cdn dollars. Well duh. Did they ever? In your shop in Peterborough, do you just accept American dollars? When you take a trip to Dominican Republic or England or Japan do they take Cdn dollars there in the stores? So why the hell should these poor shop keeps be responsible for having to go and exchange the funds you were too lazy to do before coming across the border? Just because the value is at par doesn't make it legal tender in another country. Ignorance is bliss I guess. And the way they were carrying on though... it was as if they had personally been responsible for the US dollar's decline. (sigh)...
