I picked up a new 2000 Daewoo Lanos S for $11,995 - base. 86 HP and 5-speed manual, no air con (can't afford to with 86 horse!). A relative of mine bought it off lease for $4,000 and has put 200,000 kms on it with only regular service.
The 'Epic' (pardon the pun) problem, as Chris topically noted, was in part cannibalism withing Chevy's own brand at the time. In 2003/2004, if I recall:
1 the old Cavalier was being phased out at MASSIVE discounts
2 the new Cobalt was just rolling out the door
3 the Malibu was just recently launched
4 shoehorn in the Korean step-sibling Epica (formerly Leganza)
5 squeeze in Optra (still-born Nubria)
6 for good measure, toss in Aveo (Lano spiritual successor)
What was GM Canada thinking? Depending on incentive and options, ANY of these cars would have been eating at the same $16-$21,000 range

- or at least in range of someone to step up into payment wise.
And, am I the only person that has come to the realization that Ford's dominance of the truck market is because GM insists on splitting their market into TWO brands

? They aren't far off Ford when you combine Chey and GMC's sales numbers.
Just sayin', that's all......
