MD's new family bus
« on: August 31, 2007, 06:27:21 pm »
Well, the MDX is gone.  After 3 1/2 faithful years of happy service, the wonderfully reliable and well built Acura is no longer serving as our main family hauler.  New to us and a perfect companion to my 911 is a midnight blue pearl Honda Odessey Touring.  Details to follow......

Well, MD, congrats, but with mixed feelings. Sorry, but the new wheels do little for my bubbly enthusiasm, and I think both the 1st and 2nd gen MDXs are great rigs. BUT, time marches on, or rather wifey wanted the Ody (just as my wife opted for a new Solara a while back). Getting a new one is always fun, but at least 1. it was her turn, and 2. you have your 911 (Thank god). If it had to be a van, at least you got a good one.  ;)

Try to be excited...... ;) ;) ;D

Thanks guys.  Ovr, you're great....I had the same mixed feelings but I know how much my wife likes the Ody and who am I to argue that it's not the vehicle for her?  After a trip out with the family, I have some observations.

Firstly, the minvan trumps the MDX in every way when we look at practicality.  My son has no problems getting in and out.  Everybody has room to spare, and there's a lot of family friendly designs when you look at the interior.  Lots of convenience features and to be honest, we're a spoiled family.  It's got everything we need and more.  There's cubbys everywhere for us to store stuff/junk.  There's about a jillion cupholders.  There's very nifty and efficient cubby spaces/trays.  Honestly, it's great inside.  However, when I look at the MDX and compare it to the Honda, the leather in the Honda feel like industrial rubber.  The extra features of a 'premium' brand is lacking in the Honda - such things as power passenger seat, power lumbar support, auto tilting right mirror when going into reverse, auto wipers, and premium stereo.  However, what I do gain is: power rear doors, power liftgate, larger sunroof, power pedals, a much improved and feature laden navi system, and tri-zone climate control.  The HVAC controls are very easy to use and very easy to reach.  The voice controls in the Ody can control the HVAC, something my MDX could not.  The visibility is very good with the exception of the front a pillars at the base are a bit thick and tough to see around, and the b pillar on the drivers side is all I see when I shoulder check.  I have to lean a bit to the left out the driver's window to get a good view.  The suspension is much more sorted than the MDX.  I found the Acura very comfortable but a bit soft and wallowy.  The Ody is still very compliant but feels a bit more secure and less tippy.  This is probably due to the lower centre of gravity.  The longer wheelbase is also a nice thing to keep things very smooth.  It drives very well.  Steering is firm but very trackable.  It's a minivan....not bad.

Overall, I'm very impressed.  I'm happy about the move into the Odyssey and my wife is very happy.  It rained so the new vehicle is dirty, but it's going to be cleaned and Klasse'd so stay tuned for pics.

That must be one of the longer posts you've posted MD, lol!

That just shows how excited you feel.  :)

Yeah, your wife is happy, and I know that makes you very happy.

And now, it's *your* turn again, hehe. (psst, maybe a winter beater sometime later?)

No that "MD" actually now stands for the new club he just joined - the family man's club of MiddleageD

But at least it is a sensible vehicle and the color does mix well on so many different levels. Looking forward to the pix - today! ::)

He does keep mentioning that he likes the SVX.

I would be sold on the NAVI, power sliding doors alone.  :)

The ultimate family vehicle. Your wife liked it all along, you are coming around to the same conclusion.  ;D

Congratulations, thats a very impressive feature list.
do you have rear view camera or plan to install one on it?

Congrats MD, I am not a minivan fan at all, but the Ody is a classy looking van for sure.

The Ody has a rear view backup camera, along with front and rear parking sensors.....I'm just waiting for side and roof sensors.  ;)

It's a great van, always liked the functionality of it....and the interior isn't bad.  It's a small step down from the MDX, but it's very comfortable nonetheless.

There's lots of cool buttons on the centre console....and the navi has lots of toys....so it's all good from the techy end.

Nice ride. I found myself checking out a Hondda showroom when I was reshoeing the Volvo at the tire shop next door. The Oddy. was very impressive. That being said I am still eyeing the V10 diesel Touareg for sale in Montana. ;D
