This is just normal ups and downs of any commodity based on market conditions, who do you want to blame  this on?

... GM, Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC, all rely on supplying construction trade workers with vehicles as a major source of profit. ...

It's going to get a lot worst before it starts to get better.  GM's turnaround is far from done.  Is this a taste of things to come if the union talks go down the crapper?  :P

Unfortunate for the 1200 families to get hit just after Xmas especially as these layoffs are permanent.

 The sound bites I saw on the news were  of Buzz  saying that the Gov has no strategy to deal with this....  I wonder what  strategy he expects.Are we all expected to buy pickup trucks  instead of cars I wonder ?
His last rant was about Korean cars  where he might just have had a valid complaint but  this has nothing to do with that.

Question: is a permanent layoff a layoff or just being fired ? I have always thought that layoffs were by definition temporary.

I think in a temporary lay-off situation the company has a reasonable expectation of when the workers might return. In a permanent situation, there is no expectation of a return to work date. I think it has some sort of legislative connotation with EI. You still get a record of employment, permantent layoff is essentially fired but for reasons of lack of work. Any HR professionals out there to clean this up?

Yeah, it bears re-emphasizing that this was a pickup truck plant.  Even if Astras and Auras and new Malibus were flying off of dealer lots, these layoffs would probably take place.  The entire pickup truck market is shrinking due to fuel prices.

One GM rep was one the news talking about how the company wishes to limit production to demand levels.

What a unique concept!  ::)

I feel terrible for the line workers but Buzz came off as an idiot. What is the federal government supposed to do that would not involve protectionist practices? Nevermind that it was stated that 85% of the trucks built in the plant were for the American market, so are our taxes supposed to be used to bolster a foreign market now? Idiot.  :P
