OPP's New Aircraft Speed Control (how to beat it, legally)
« on: August 30, 2007, 09:04:47 am »
Just before I left  Kanada I heard the OPP have, or will be purchasing light aircraft to control speeders.

Check out www.radioworld.ca and buy yourself a communications scanner to monitor police communications. Yes, it IS 100% LEGAL to monitor police radio. I have a Bearcat BC 246T analog radio. The OPP have gone digital so a radio will cost a little more. Frequencies are available at www.radioreference.com.

Aircraft can't pull over a vehicle, so they (police) usually do a blitz and set up an area to pull over the offenders.  Aircraft calculates the speed of a vehicle and then RADIO's the vehicles speed and discription. Usually radio traffic is pretty consistant so before you reach the area that is known for aircraft speed control, you could just avoid that area all together. Green Lane in Newmarket is popular one and the scanner has saved me a number of times.

Or just look up in the air for de plane, de plane.

Happy Motoring!

If there's lines painted on the road, chances are police use it for aircraft monitoring.

Here's another unique concept, have reasonable speed limits that people will follow.  ::)

Everybody's going to speed here and there, and by speeding I do not mean excessive 'Cannonball Run' speeding....but 5kph over or 10kph over.  It's only the excessive speeders who worry about being caught....as they are likely the fastest thing on the road.

Laws can be changed by the people by electing a new set of pols.   I suspect that speed limit changes do NOT need a change in any law, just an Order in Council... often done on Friday afternoons in the summer when no-one is paying attention.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Yep. quite true.  There is ALWAYS some pressure group that wanted a law and unless you wait 100 years 'til they are all dead  they will rise up and protest any repeal.   That is why Orders in Council are  (very) quietly used and few people read the Canada/Ontario Gazette.

Saf..what's up with the pee references in two different threads in the same day? ;-)
High definition :censor: jugs..best Trailerpark Boys episode...

Good idea about the radio scanner. Somebody should set up a speed trap website.
I remember during the good old photo radar days that radio stations would tell you where they were.

Check xyyz.ca , you'll have to signup for the Red Light Camera and 'common' speed traps (which constantly move around).

New pilots who have to do their solo flights from out of London here fly to Windsor and land and then return later. they usaully follow the 401 which makes many folks think they are a police aircraft but they are not. I have seen drivers really slow down when they spot one of these planes even tho the colour is all wrong on the aircraft. They have always used Blue and White aircraft in the past and I believe the new planes will be as well.  :)
