No way I'd buy an 08.  MB has a long history (even in their prime) of poor 1st year quality.  That said, here's hoping The Star starts to shine again...
No place I'd rather be...

I went into Mercedes on Wednesday.  They didn't have any on the showroom floor but happened to have one in the basement parking garage.  The sales rep took me down to have a look.  Couldn't sit in it but got to admire it from the outside.  It's a nice looking vehicle but not as sleek in person as the photos make it appear.  (The one I looked at was white so the colour could have been contributing).  A lot smaller than it looks in the pics and a little more boxier.  None the less, still damn sexy.  I may just get on the Merc. band wagon.  We'll see.  I'm awaiting the new Accord to arrive in the showrooms.

New Accord vs. Merc ? You can't compare the 2!  :P

That's right....Merc will probably be in for repairs WAY more often! ;D

For whatever reason, MB reliability bugaboos scare me a lot less than VW / Audi. ???

That's interesting considering that MB has consistently been WORSE than VW over the last 6-8 years according to CR.

I am aware of this, but there's still some glitter in that three pointed star.

Especially since they've ditched Chrapsler now.  Lets hope Mercedes will begin to top the quality lists again.

I hope so too but they've got a long climb to get back to where they were 15-20 years ago. :-\

I see from the review in the Tor Star that M-B still have the foot operated parking brake even with a manny tranny.

When I took my driving test in the UK many years ago you could not pass the test with that combination unless the release of the brake was controllable like a manual lever is.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Might need a well trained 3rd leg to do that then.  :)

If I recall and am not mistaken, in the UK do they not teach drivers using a manual tranny to use the parking brake to hold the vehicle while starting out on an incline?  When I was at Mercedes I think the sale rep mentioned something about the vehicle having a system in place that prevented the vehicle from rolling backwards when starting on an incline.  I think they called it Hill Assist or something like that.

yes,Oh Wetone  that is the way is was anyway.  I have never driven a car with any form of automatic hill holding device on a manual transmission but I gather that there are some.

It is still a tempting car for all that...

Not sure if it is still the case but Subarus with MT had what they called "hill holder" clutches for many years

The hill holder was discontinued for a few years and then reinstated on Subarus. Current models have it, I believe.

Love the car's looks, but 1st year reliability and the fact that it just isn't as practical as we need it to be makes this an illusion for me.

I was really interested in the C300 sport, red with manual... But then the dealer offered me a couple grand below bluebook value on my 07 3 series, and wouldnt budge on the price! ... I was insulted by the low ball price... :(
