2latecrew's "new ride" Out with the old in with the older.
« on: August 19, 2007, 08:17:24 pm »
Well the Volvo v50 went back (thankfully) off lease Aug. 1st. Thanks to my father's very conservative driving habits I was able to replace it with a likely more reliable vehicle even though its 7 plus years older. Introducing my new/old 1999 Nissan Maxima GLE. It was driven only 85,000KM and stored in a heated garage all its life. Since I was able to acquire such a lightly used car for such a reasonable price my wife allowed me a budget to make it more satisfying to me since it will be our only mode of transportation for the next 2-3 years at least.

One of the biggest issues I had when I first drove the car was the very soft floaty suspension of the GLE model. Even my dad admitted he should have bought an SE fully loaded to get the luxury goodies he wanted rather than the GLE.

The shocks were replaced with adjustable Tokico illuminas. The springs with H&R sport springs. The ride is not much firmer than a stock SE but body roll greatly reduced. It also lowers the car a conservative 1.3 inches. Just enough to look finished.

The biggest dilemma was the wheels since I absolutely didn't want to look "pimped" and wanted to keep from adding unsprung weight just to look good. I chose some fairly lightweight (18 lbs) Enkei Evo 5 rims wrapped in 215/50 17 Kumho ASX tires shipped from Carmodifier.ca A set of clear front bumper lights (off eBay) complete the transformation.

I'll take some interior shots soon to show the sound system and the interior.

Haha, you two are setting a trend here!

I like the clear front turn signals, but those wheels do scream pimped to me. But like ice cream, many flavours for different people. Those Maximas are very, very nice cars tho. Does it feel bigger than the V50 inside and all-around? Different kind of power delivery?

Know the Volvo gave you plenty of headache, so hope this new ride is more reliable for you.

The wheels were actually suggested by someone on this board. Even my wife and mom approved them  ;D so in the ended I didn't worry about looking pimped.

I am still getting used to driving an automatic. I drive autos frequently when I have rental cars but this 99 auto shows how much technology has improved. Its just not the same as driving a stick.

Now the engine is a whole different story. Its only 190 HP and 220 lb feet of torque but the car weighs LESS than my V50! The Nissan VQ has been named top 10 engine for years and I can see why. silky smooth. Much better low and mid range response than my Volvo. Just smooth creamy power right up until about 120 kph. I do find that it does lose some urge once it hits 3rd gear compared to the first 2 but overall I really like it. Even fuel economy seems close to the V50 (gotta use super though) >:(

Interior space seems huge. For sure more room in the back for the kids. Interior is remarkably up to date and leather is nice but the seats aren't as supportive as the Volvo byut most are not.

Highway ride is much quieter Less wind noise, engine revs 2500 at 120 pph instead of 3100. Much easier to have a conversation and overall jst more relaxing. I will miss the space of the wagon at some point I'm sure.

Its pretty obvious the chassis is not as rigid as the more modern v50. You can feel it flex over bumps and even though its a little lighter and has modified suspension it just doesn't Handel like a rigid modern car. But hey what can you expect? It is 100 xs better than stock.

I think my 2nd favorite part after the engine is the sound system I had installed. Not for "show" or boom but simply to have a good choice of music and great sound. ALIPNE COMPONENT SPEAKERS IN THE SFRONT DRIVEN BY @ CHANNELS OF A $ CHENNEL &)W PER AMP> The amp is hidden in the trunk. Alpine speakers ion the rear deck for fill and a small 10 inch sub in the trunk (hardly takes any room driven by 2 bridged channels (200w). It doesn't boom and rattle like a kids ride. Just a nice clean snap or vibration through the seat on rock music etc.

The head unit runs my IPod which is fantastic. Easy to keep your eyes on the road. I also have th integrated Satellite radio so I'm never without something great to listen to.

Wheels and car look sharp. With all of that space behind the wheel, it calls for some black paint to show off the calipers. Only 85,000......nice.

Nice car.  This is the last time a Maxima looked good - simply classy.  Your wheels do not look pimped at all.  Love the gunmetal.  A pimped Maxima would have huge chrome rims.  Your car looks tastfully modded.

Congrats, 2latecrew!

The older Maximas have always been one of my favourite; a very responsive car hiding behind tasteful and somewhat conservative looks.

The wheels are borderline "pimped" but do look nice.

In fact, nice job overall with the mods!  :)
