I have MAX $20K and need a family car....HELP!!
« on: August 14, 2007, 10:14:34 pm »
Hey CarFolks!

I don't have any money - likely qualify for a loan for 14,5K...i want a car with ABS, AC and 4Doors.  We have Chrysler, Ford and GM dealers here in our northern ontario city.  There are also several used car dealers in town.

Does anyone have a recommendation to buy?....lease?....new?....used?

We already own a 1994 Ford Escort (3 door) and 1995 Eagle Vision TSI.

Thanks tons!!!

Welcome to the forum!

Since you only have domestic dealers in town, I'll recommend some domestic vehicles.

I'd recommend a Pontiac Vibe (used). Good on fuel, 4 doors, hatchback versatility. It might be weak on the highway though (passing power). I am not sure if the Vibe had ABS standard on all trim lines.

A Cavalier/Cobalt/Pursuit/Sunfire sedan might do as well. Cheap transportation.

What brand of vehicles do the used car dealers offer?

Mine: 2004 Acura TSX
Family: 2005 Honda Odyssey EX, 2006 BMW 330i

:-*thnx for the welcome, 2hondadude...is the Vibe good on fuel consumption?...been lookin' at the Cobalt...seems like a "too good to be true" deal" and the l/kms rating doesn't look good.  I don't wanna waste my money at the gas station...(recalling the days of the Chev "Geo Storm"...blushing...was the first "newcar" i bought...the "barbie car")

I don't wanna waste my money.

Been jonesing for an "Impala"...used.  Any ideas on that one?

Hey M, welcome to the forum.

If you qualify for the low GM 0% financing then go for a new Cobalt/Pursuit.  It's fuel-efficient enough and you'll get low enough monthly payments.

Well an Impala would be even worse on fuel...larger engine (V6). The 2.2 L engine in the Cobalt is large for its class, but shouldn't be too shabby on gas (not as good as a Civic or Corolla).

Many Cobalts are ex rental vehicles, so they are cheap. Don't get one of those. They have most likely been abused.

Good luck on your search!

How about a Ford Focus station wagon?  The SE trim has A/C and it's only $17k including delivery (so about $18.7k after taxes) with the Ford Family Pricing.  It beats the Cobalt on fuel efficiency, it's an older model but pretty much all the bugs have been worked out, and the station wagon is really practical.

This is where you're going to get yourself into trouble.  You have to decide now if you want good reliable transportation for your money or a whole bunch of doodads.  4-cylinder engines are totally fine for real-world driving, they're fuel-efficient, and a whole bunch of us lottery winners are quite happy with their performance.

Welcome to the jungle.

I'd consider what others have suggested.

Ford Focus
Chevy Cobalt/Pontiac Pursuit
Pontiac Vibe
Dodge Calibre

The 4cyl engines of today are pretty good actually.  Decent power and great fuel economy.  It won't have the thrust of your Eagle Vision, but you will also get better mileage out of the newer, smaller, lighter cars.  The Focus, Vibe, and Calibre have pretty good interior room too....

Four cylinder engines have come a long way, trust me. There are at least four of us on this forum drive a non-turbo 4cyl car that stickers close to $40k, and nobody has complained about the engine yet. :)

Vibe could be a good choice. It came a bit better equipped, if I recall correctly, than its Matrix counterpart. GM price with Toyota reliability. Kind of anemic power though, compared to its more modern counterparts, as the Corolla platform is very (VERY) long in the tooth.

Also agree on the Cobalt, as in avoid the ex-rentals / demos. They will have had a very rough life.

Do you really have no access to anything other than domestic dealers? Your options would expand greatly. Someone posted that Hyundai was offering 0% financing over 72 months on 07 Sonatas. Thats just outstanding. Another forum goer recently bought a 07 Sonata GL Manual for a shade under $20k, plus tax. Financed at 0%, its like not paying any tax (guessing...haven't run the numbers). Hyundai has made great strides, and I imagine the 4 cylinder offering is at least as good as the domestic ones. Worth a shot if you have dealer support in a nearby town.

As far as used options, for $20k there are many. Wouldn't spend $20k on most used cars though if you're just looking for basic transpo.

EDIT: Vibe also has available AWD...could be worth it for those Northern Ontario winters (I grew up in Sudbury). Saps even more of what precious little power the car has, though.

Hyundai dealers aren't popular in smaller towns...in terms of non domestic companies, Toyota seems to be in smaller towns

But yes, a Sonata would be very good, especially at the price they are offered at now.

I don't "need" dodads...my FOR SURE needs are:

-ABS
-4doors
-roomy frontseat
-AC
-2.2l engine (if i can)

can i get that with a 4cyl car?

Your momma is undoubtedly right, but can you afford that champagne taste when you have to borrow the beer money?

The Focus comes as a sedan or a hatch as well.  I just figured that living in a somewhat remote area, the extra room and versatility of a station wagon would come in handy.  Maybe I'm just thinking too practically...

IMO, if you're going to spend over $10k then you might as well stretch and get something new with 0% or low financing.  If you're going used, then get the best Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, or Mazda Protege you can find for $5-8k.

i really dunno if used if the way i should be looking. (getting hissy and frustrated)

gosh, y'all...you really are helping, tho.

Thnx for all your input.

<scratching my....>

Most cars will have what you need (ABS, AC, 4 doors) and will fit in your budget.  What you have is a give and take situation.  Give up a little (big V6 power for a 4 banger) and gain a lot (newer car with good fuel economy and reliability).

MD...(gglnblush)...so you would buy new rather than used?

That's another of my dilemmas...new...used...lease...borrow?....(hairtossshouldershrug)

btw...does the "blueeyed goshgolleegee" eye thing work on car salesmen?  ;)
