Today's Used Vehicle Review:
MazdaSpeed6, 2006-2007

MazdaSpeed6, 2006-2007Equipped with a 274-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive, the "scary" Mazdaspeed6 has had "a few reliability problems", reports Contributing Editor, Chris Chase - notably, "a rash of broken differential mounting brackets and drive axles."

That article made me want a 323 GTX, not a Speed6.  Hmm...

I'd get a ZR-1...but the interior sucks.

OK, that's it...I've had it.

All of these articles on this car lately...and the fact it's going bye-bye...time for another test-drive.

I've seen this car available with cloth seats...I wonder how hard it would be to recover the seats with a more intersting colour other than the same darn 'ol black.

Wow this article doesn't reflect my own experience and gives a pretty negative image of this car. I haven't had any differential noise or reliability issue. I finally experienced the sudden lack of power twice just lately with 93 octane fuel. Some people had posted here negative opinions of the intercooler design that are completely unsupported: I didn't experience any lost of power in +36-37 deg.C ambient temperature while the underhood temp was higher, up to 42 deg.C...

As I mentioned before, my only disappointment is with the clutch feel. I never heard Mazda was replacing clutches to address customer concerns. I am giving Mazda a chance to come up with their own improvement before I attempt the clutch adjustment procedure that is circulating on Mazda forums (if they don't offer me to replace it next time I'll bring it for regular maintenance).

Subaru Legacy GT is not in the same league of the Speed6 IMO. Only the 2007 SpecB version (not the 2006MY) is somewhat competitive but at a much higher price . I didn't buy the Speed6 for its expected reliability records based on the experience we have with our Mazda6 GT V6 (just like I wouldn't buy a 3 Series expecting it to be trouble free either...Smiley )  But I do hope it's Japanese origin will fare better in the long run than the US one (other Mazda6s)...

Would you consider the VW Jetta GLI as a MPS6 competitor?

Does that mean you assume the MPS6 handles better?

Speed6 has AWD...it may be Haldex, but its still AWD.

I'd buy the GLI over the Speed6 solely for the rims though, plus easier to drive in snooze mode.

I assume nothing. I have driven both. And any 6 (let alone MS6 )is a much more engaging, communicative, and sporting ride.

Legacy GT is more classy and restrained while MSP6 tends to the loud side. The inherent problem with putting an AWD system (mind you an inferior Haldex one) on a FWD car will yield compromises. Mazda is offering heavy discounts on MSP6. So it's a good time to look into one if the car tickles your fancy.

Not really. I always like the GLI very much. I wish there was a GLI AWD version. If VW would sell the R32 here, I would consider it a very worthy competitor of the Speed6. In fact it might have been the only other car I would have seriously considered thought it would likely be more expansive.  The GLI doesn't have AWD, 280 ft-lb of torque and the sporty suspension of the Mazda.

The GLI is a 4-door sedan that can be driven spiritedly; the Mazdaspeed6 is a sports car that can handle family duties...

But would you be willing to pay CAD$40,000~45,000 for a 250HP AWD Jetta R32?
