Don't the high speed networks in Europe operate at a loss? (ICE). If they can't generate a profit how do we expect it to here in Canada?

Good point. I don't know. I road the ICE from Nurnberg to Hamberg and it was pretty pricy per person. That was in Deutschmarks in 2000, 120.DM one way, a little less then 100 Euro now.

I think that the feds should subsidize the rail system in Canada just as they do in Europe. The money should be subtracted from equalization payments.  The same IMHO should be done for a 4 lane   6 lane Trans Canada
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

The french tgv system overheads look a bit different but I am sure they are functionally identical.  Also TGVs have differently constructed  tracks and no level crossings. The tracks are fenced off to prevent people and animals from getting in the way of the trains... I can see these things being problems for implementation... every farmer in the country insisting on getting his cattle or tractor to the other side of the tracks at government expense

They also dont share track with other ( slower) trains.   This I can see might be a problem in some places having to add double tracks across the mountains for instance.

You would also need to get rid of the level crossings and build overpasses for the trains.

It could be done if there's the political will to do it.  Amtrak electricified the New York to Boston corridor in the 90s.   It was wonderful to see Acela and AEM7 electric locomotives entering South Station from my old apartment window on a recent trip.  I used to only see F40PHs diesel-electrics which were noisy and smelly.

Did you see any of the HHP-8's, affectionately nicknamed "hippos?"

Like the Acela locomotives, they are co-built with Bombardier.
