Mandatory Engine Immobilizers in All '08 Vehicles
« on: July 12, 2007, 09:19:23 am »
Heard this one on the news today.  The insurance companies are pushing for vehicle manufacturers to put engine immobilizers in all 2008 model vehicles.

Hmmm, my Aunt had a Civic Coupe with an engine immobilizer and the thieves just towed the car. It's probably in some other country.
"No, I can't get you a deal on a Honda".
"We do everything in our cars except drive".
"Canada, the next police state"

The Canadian Government is mandating Immobilizers in all  light vehicles sold after Sept 2007, provoked maybe by the Insurance companies.

To my amazement BMW still does not have an "approved" immobilizer. ( I checked the Insurance web site yesterday)

Sometimes the Baliff and friends don't need the keys either. They just tow them away. Sometimes the car hunters also have keys made as well.  :)

The new BMW keys are just fobs that slot into a hole in the dashboard and the car sure wont start without the fob in there... but I guess there is something in the regulations.

Generally that is correct, but if you have the "Comfort Access" option on the new BMWs, you can have the big key fob thingy in your pocket or purse, and the car will start once you hit the "Start/
stop" button without the fob in the slot. Without that option, you need the fob in the slot.

I think many of today's vehicles now come with engine immobilizer, so the new law may not impact as many vehicles as one might think.  ???

If they really want your car, they can still tow it or break into your home and steal the keys or mug you on the streets.

It will affect the econobox cars - they just added 5% to the cost of an Aveo, Yaris, etc which likely don't need them anyway.  ::)

I disagree Arthur. These units are in large scale serial production for other cars in ech Mfrs line so the marginal cost is probably $10

Both the Pathfinder and Sienna have it, and both are (were) the entry level versions.  This should not be a big deal and any manufacture who complains does not have the consumers best interests at heart.

Anti-theft immobilizers to become mandatory on new cars, September 1st

Toronto, Ontario - Effective September 1, 2007, Transport Canada will make it mandatory for all new passenger cars and light-duty trucks to be equipped with anti-theft electronic immobilizers. Audi, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, General Motors, Hyundai, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Saab, Subaru, Volkswagen and Volvo have recently announced their plans to equip 2008 model-year vehicles in Canada with immobilizers meeting the requirements of the Canadian standards, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC).

According to a 2006 listing of the most frequently-stolen vehicles in Canada released by IBC, none of the top ten had approved immobilizers.

Immobilizers arm when the vehicle is turned off, to prevent unauthorized starting. The IBC says that on average, 40 Canadians die and 65 are seriously injured each year due to auto theft. For more information on vehicle immobilizers, visit the IBC website.

Safi, where did you find that picture?  :)

Remember, don't loose your keys.  It's going to cost an arm and leg or two to replace and program it for the immobilizer.

Most of the vehicles with Onstar or Bluetooth have had this option for years now. They can send a signal to shut the fuel pump down which is what happens if they are being driven or the proper key persay is not in place. No proper key tool means  No fuel pump to do do the work required of it as well.  :)

Making cars harder and harder to steal could have a negative unforeseen effect.

If it becomes impossible or near impossible to steal your car when you are not around, robbers will just wait around and car-jack you.  This will increase trauma, or murders (robber could get startled and shoot you, or you try to be a hero).

Take what I said with a grain of salt.

People are floored when they find out how much it costs to cut a key that has an immobilizer in it...  I'm sure the dealerships will love this, since they can be assured a healthy income from people replacing lost keys at $50 dollars each, instead of $2.99.
