New tires for Accord - Morty?
« on: July 09, 2007, 07:46:20 pm »
Hi Morty et al:

You had previously supplied me with a set of Falkiens for my 1996 Accord EX...and I have now worn them out!

What is your recomendation for a good all-season tire: considerations are quietness, ride, comfort with handling a secondary consideration.

Thanks in advance

Do you have winter tires?

If not, don't bother with the Proxes4.

I do have winter tires, but they are nearing the end of their life (lives?), too. We will likely be purchasing a new car soon; this car will be kept to be a city car and will not see much more real winter driving. So, I will be looking for a reasonably priced all season tire.

The tire trends site has Pirelli 3000 on sale for $85, which look adequate for my "beater."

1996 Accord Ex...are you running 195/60R15's?

Recommended going with a higher speed rated tire for your vehicle. Probably want to stick with an H-rated or better. Proxes4 is a great tire, but not available in your size. I would consider the Kumho Ecsta ASX a little less expensive and a more suitable tire. If you want to spend a little more also consider the Yokohama Avid H4S...not as quiet as the Kumho, but very good wet capability.

How many KM's did you get on the ZE-512's?

That's the size.

I had a look at the Kumhos on your site...are they quiet? How is winter driving with them? (we will likley relegate this car to city driving only and will forgo the costs of winter tires, saving that for the new vehicle. As such, I do want to have reasonably good winter performance, since they are the only tires for this car).

The 512's have about 50K on them (taking into account the use of winter tires). My mechanic is recomending replacement, but don't know if that is because they are worn out or because I pooched them after running for about 5K with poor front wheel alignment. I little disappointing in terms of wear, but they were a pretty nice tire.  :)

Poor wheel alignment can kill the best tires in short order.

Looking for winter in an all-season is one that will be difficult. The Kumho ASX is a wonderful 3 Season tire, but the snow and ice will quickly subdue them. If you are able to park on those days then highly recommended.

They are reasonably quiet, but all tires do make noise and if you are sensitive to that pitch then they will be louder. However, as a generality they are quiet and have been popular.

We also have the recently received Falken ZE912. Nice looking tire replacing the ZE-512.
