I've got a minivan coming off lease (GM) and am giving it back.

Besides the obvious scratches and small dings that are "normal wear", it looks like I'll have to get a pair
of tires to pass safety.  The brakes probably need a resurface on the front and maybe a reline on the
rear drums, but

..............when does my obligation offcially end with the vehicle?

Can the dealer (or GM) come back to me 3 weeks later and ask for the money to do the brakes and
anything else that a safety may require?

No I would think once they sign off they can Not come back on you for any extra's of any kind especially weeks later. As long as you have done what all the rules are regarding the lease obligation that is the end of it.  Smiley

Tires need to meet min tread depth. Start searching for used tires now. Should be able to pick up some cheap.

I agree and would be letting my fingers do the walking at your local wreckers for a good price.  Smiley

Defnitely go looking for used tires. Generally used tire places guarantee their product to at least pass a safety. Incidentally, thats all you need to have for the return unless specified in the agreement. If they give you a hard time, tell them your next car won't be from the same dealership, unless that deal is already done....

Some dealerships may not even bother going to look at the vehicle. They might just ask for the mileage and walk away. That's been my experience with the last lease return as well as my step dad's numerous returns.

Just had the preinspection company come to look at my volvo before I return in 2 weeks. Tires were down almost to waer bars right on 4mm of tread and they said no problem. I've got a few dents and scratches but they were all less than credit card sized so no charge. Depends on where you return it but they are not all super picky.
