Importing a 2007 Cayman S from US into Canada
« on: July 09, 2007, 01:24:41 pm »
Hi All,
A friend of mine, finishing his residency in the UK is now coming back to Toronto to live permanently. He's in the market of  a new 2007 Cayman S, but wants to pick it up  in the US as it is significantly cheaper.  He wants to know if the dealer is willing to sell a new car as a "used car" in order to simply the  process.

Any suggestions ?

The 2007 Cayman is importable provided that it is a US spec vehicle..  And importing has  been covered many times lately

Just in case your post is unclear, a UK spec vehicle is absolutely NOT importable, if he was planning some end run around the rules!

???

Do you mean you want the dealer to buy a US car, bring it across the border, and sell it to your friend?

He wants the dealer to sell the "new" Cayman as a "used" vehicle, because apparently it simplifies the importing process...

I'll take a 997 GT3 RS but I'd prefer to pay used car prices for it too.  When you're dealing with importing things across borders, I personally think it's a wiser idea to play by the rules.

From all the threads on this topic it is not clear that used vs new makes it any easier any more.  The same paperwork from Porsche NA would have to be provided at the border and the duty would be the same and the GST would as well unless the car was  more than 6 months old 2nd hand.
