I spoke too soon. I think I found it at the dealership. So I see the price they started from.

Massive depreciation.  You know it didn't sell for that.

I've driven the 03.  It is what it is - a very large SUV with a thirst to match.  My parents had transmission problems with theirs before 60K - needed a new (rebuilt) tranny, right after they had the transmission fluid flushed (stupid machines).  Whatever they do, tell your neighbours to have the transmission fluid changed, but not power flushed at the nest service interval.

I would advise him to look for a different make as I don't think he will be very Happy with it after a few problems develpe which they will. These are definitely known for bad trannies.  :)

Too late I think as he has bought it and will take delivery later this week. However he did mention that he can obtain a dealership warranty for the vehicle...I recall $3200 for 4 years?

(I know that the vehicle in question has a tranny cooler...that's a good sign.)

$800/year buys a lot of maintenance.  There's no reason to throw $3200 worth of good money after (potentially) bad money on the monster SUV.  Since he's already bought the behemoth he might as well save the bogus warranty money.

$800/year buys a lot of maintenance.

But not a lot of transmissions.

I would get that warranty.
