Most synthetics are the "high-end" oil from the oil companies, and therefore have a more robust additive package.  That is evidenced in the TBN numbers from oil analyses.  Another reason for the possibility of an extended interval is that synthetics are generally less likely to shear to a lower weight, although there are certainly exceptions.  I think there's one grade of Royal Purple that loves to shear.

ok,, had the oil change done at the stealership. I told service advisor to use synthetic oil and I'll pay the difference from my freebie regular oil change.. He asked me if I was racing the car.. and I said "no i drive 90% city thats why Id like to use synthetic"..cut the story short,, he did not recommended it and he suggested to do frequent regular oil change than use synthetic.

Barrie had mentioned ""My one Fleetwood has this device option and syn does not register on it properly at all. Many of the other makes are the same
.. This is most probably the reason why he discouraged me in using syn..

anyway at 30,500Km.. They need to replace  a faulty waterpump (leaking).. which I am surprised.. Tech also found a leaking transmission on right axle.. and of course they reaplced the belts that are wet due to leaky wpump...all done under warranty.. car is 2 years old..

I had a 92 mazda MPV with 230Km,, and only replaced the original pump bec i changed the timing belt.. . and here I have a car with 30,000KM with already major service done..

Don't know if this has changed but the oil sensors on all engines only worked correctly with Dino Oil only a few years ago. My one Fleetwood has this device option and syn does not register on it properly at all. Many of the other makes are the same.  :)
Oil life monitor or oil pressure sensor?  As far as I know, there are no oil life monitors that actually test the oil.  Most are based on an advanced algorithm that incorporates operating speeds/RPM, operating temperature, warm-up cycles, average run time, etc.  They're calibrated to dino oil meeting the minimum specifications at the time of release.

As long as your city driving properly warms up the engine, dino oil should hold up well up to 8,000 km.  Until you end your warranty period, I would go with whatever oil the service advisor recommends.  After that, you can make your own conclusions.

The best option IMO would be to buy a jug of synthetic on sale and bring it to your dealer next time for the freebie oil change, let them supply the filter, labour, and cleanup.

I think that is what AVToller does with his Yaris and it makes a lot of sense. Synthetic bought retail on sale can be quite cheap.

I am using Mobil 1 5/30 with Toyota oil filter. Changed every six months because every three months would be and over kill. imo

The Dakota with the 4.7L gets a fresh wix filter and  Esso XD-3 0W-30 (the good stuff)  once a year or between 9000-12000kms.

The Volvo V70R with the turbo heat gets a fresh Volvo filter and German Castrol 0W-30 every 8000kms regardless of time. (About 8 months)

The Volvo P1800 gets Rotella 15W-40 and fresh filter just before it goes to sleep in the fall. I am on trak to put about 5000 miles on the car/year.

I think with a NA engine and quality synthetic oil and good filter that 12 000kms is reasonable. My last oil analysis from the Dakota showed little contamination and plenty of additive life left on the Xd-3. The Dakota is a messy change due to it's skidplates. To ensure a tidy job I have to remove the two large skid plates. Once a year is enough for me.
