cleaning the dash
« on: June 05, 2007, 03:20:07 pm »
hi, I have a black matte color dash and there are two shiny spots. I could have touched it while doing an oil change. I tried to clean it by rubbing a damp microfiber but I cant seem to bring back the matte finish..

Does armor all orange wipes work??

thanks

Hi 'echo7'

For starters I would try using an all-purpose cleaner that is safe for plastics/trim (use a microfiber or terry towel cloth to apply/remove), or perhaps some all-purpose cleaning wipes. This should remove the shiny oil/dirt spots. Afterwards it is always beneficial to follow up with a good application of protectant, whether you use armorall, simoniz, meguiar's etc.. it comes down to personal preference. For a nice matte finish I always use Meguiars #40 vinyl/rubber cleaner/conditioner. I find it doesn't leave a greasy finish afterwards and maintains a nice matte finish while leaving a nice leather/tannery type scent.

Good Luck!  :)

I would NOT use Windex as the ammonia can bleach the dash into a greyish colour, making it worse than it is.

I can also vouch for "303 Aerospace Protectant" as a finishing detailing spray for any plastic/rubber/vinyl pieces in the car.  The stuff is AWESOME.  Available at Canadian Tire.

I would suggest some spray nine, or perhaps orange lightning (made by spray nine) spray cleaner. Afterwards, follow-up with an application of Meguiar's #40 and you'll be off to the races ;D

Just a hint once you get the dash clean: Keep a Swiffer Duster in your map-pocket.  They work so well to get light dust and crap off of the dash and door panels, and steering column.  I find by using these once every day or two while at a stop light or before heading out in the morning, I spend much less time cleaning the dash with chemicals (and using a product like 303, which has great UV inhibitors, the dash stays protected and looking great for a long time!).

and so I bought the meguiars #40 at CT.. 15$ in total.. I did not bought the wipes since reading the description on the meguiars it says "cleaning"

I let the car sit under ground parking to cool off.. about 7PM when I started cleanig the interior.. The smell of the meguiars is very similar ot the 2001 (green biottle) thing. I applied on the dash as per instructions and put more time on the oily mark...after a few scrubs.. i noticed that the oily mark on my dash was still there and was hardly removed..

Now may concern is.. would the the meguiars seal the oil mark and will it be harder to remove?

You need to use the cleaner before the protectant. Try a small bottle of Orange Lightning or Spray Nine -this will remove the oily residue... THEN apply the #40 :)

That's fine and all, but what pressure should I use in my Hercules G5000Z (215/40RZ17) tires?   ;D :run:

To make it relevant.

You mean, what pressure should you use in your Hercules G5000Z (215/40RZ17) tires while applying the tire shiner?

Woolite to water in a 1:6 ratio.
