Which Hyundai has the 7-year/120km warranty?
« on: June 04, 2007, 06:56:40 pm »
Insurance company wrote off my retired dad's plymouth voyager after a relatively minor accident.

I'm helping him get back on the road in a car that's affordable, good on gas, and won't give him trouble for some years to come. He doesn't drive much and when he does, it's mostly around town.

Coming from a van, he was hoping to keep some of the versatility, so we've been looking at 2003-2005 5-door hatches, even a couple of 3-doors.

He doesn't want to spend more than $10,000, so we've been looking at Hyundai Elantra GT's, 3Door Accents, and a Protege5. It's tough finding a Mazda out there under $10k, and even the Elantra's are pushing past that.

Question - In Canada, Hyundai may or may not have had a warranty that covered 7-years or 120,000km. What model years and what models, if only specific ones, did it apply to? I've heard conflicting reports, so I'd appreciate some help. Thanks.

It was a promotion (on all their cars) that lasted a couple of yrs but ended Jan '05. They went to 5yrs 100,000 after that. I was lucky enough to buy my Tucson Nov'04.

Would that warranty be transferable to a new owner?

I'm thinking about buying a used Elantra too. My brother bought one a couple years ago (in a private sale), so I asked him the insurance/transfer question. Here's what he said:

"Yeah the warranty transfers automatically, but it is a good idea to let Hyundai know by sending in your name/address so that you, rather than the previous owner, get notified when they do part recalls, etc.  When we went to the Hyundai dealership for our first oil change they did all of that for us -- very handy."

He loved the car, BTW, (until he sold it and moved to England), and has convinced me it's the best used value on the market. Lemon-Aid and Consumer Reports bear that out. Hyundai has made major gains in quality in the last three years, so I'd hold out for at least a 2004.

I purchased a 2009 Hyundai Elantra brand new. Since then the car has had nothing but problems (starting three days after purchse). Of course my "amazing" Hyundai warrenty covers none of this. Upon independent mechanic review I have found the dealership lied about what repair was needed! When I contacted Hyundai Corp they sent me an insulting stock letter, the jist: "So sad, to bad!" I've put over $3000 into my brand new car since 2009. I'm not sure how or why consumer reports believes in this sub-standard  "product"? Buyer beware here: Hyundai/Kia sounds like a good deal but like most things that sound to good to be true Hyundai is as well!

From my experience I'd never purchase from Hyundai again and I'll be making sure none of my friends and family make the same mistake as me.

With all due respect, your single bad experience with Hyundai doesn't mean it's a sub standard product.  Every manufacturer on the planet can make a bad one.  Whatever your brand of choice is, you can be guaranteed that someone wrote a similar post to yours on a car forum.

Although there seems to be some issues with the car, half of the problem is this person was easily talked in to (and approved) any work the dealer suggested.

I believe Hyundai dropped the lengthier warranty early in the 2005 model run.

Buying an older used Hyundai is a gamble. The Elantra GT has multiple reports of problems and comes from the generation that were considered disposable cars. I would look elsewhere.

'06+ Sonatas have proven to be pretty bullet-proof, have they not?  They're quiet, reliable and (in 4cyl guise) efficient to run too.  And they can be had around the $10k mark.  A great used car buy in my opinion.
