07 Rental Return - would you buy?
« on: May 25, 2007, 02:19:36 pm »
Presumably these:

http://www.trader.ca/powerpage/details.aspx?vlotid=89420&adid=6116486
http://www.trader.ca/powerpage/details.aspx?vlotid=96560&adid=5954967

Would be a rental return. Why is it returned after less than 10k? I presume they are the basic of basic models?

Would you buy one? Why or why not?

Short but sweet!  :)

I would personally lean towards the lowest KM one, as under 9000kms without an oil change is a lot better than 24000kms without an oil change...

Without knowing for sure the story behind them, I'd say if rentals, no.

I worked at a car rental agency when I was a teenager. I wouldn't touch one of those lease returns.

Consider how you drive a rental car, multiply that by a factor of 100, and you have your answer.

Guess there's no way of verifying the oil was changed. What other maintenace is typically required before 25k?

And what discount would you ask for rentals? Is there a typical equation you can apply?

No, because they are Sonata, not to my liking
If you can find who had leased the car, that would be better
They could have come from head office in Canada

I always get kick out the rental paranoia on this board. 99% of the '07s on dealer lots are ex-rentals. There simply is no other source of used '07s. Does anybody really think that there is a huge assortment of trade-ins less than a year old?

I'm sure it would much more helpful to the original poster if the "I'd never buy a rental" people would suggest where to find all the premium one owner '07s.

If someone asked me for a discount because a used '07 was an ex-rental I'd respond with something like, "go find one that isn't."

stodge, I don't know if this helps, I think I've mentioned this before in your earlier thread.

I bought the 2007 Camry LE in October 2006 with approx 23000km, it was leased to a company. I don't have any issues with the car, no wear & tear, it was in immaculate condition. I bought it with extended warranty which the dealer sold me at $600 instead of $1000.

Cord has a point, its almost impossible to find a single person owned 2007 model year car. If you have concerns about the car, get it checked and try to obtain service records of the car or atleast oil changes.

UmroAyyar: Thanks. I don't work in the auto industry (obviously) so I'm not lucky enough to understand what is or isn't a rental, or why some rentals are sold at 1 year with 8,000km instead of 1 year at 40,000km. I'm just trying to understand about ex-rentals (due to the obvious financial benefit they give) and what I should know or find out.

Most of the time the current model year lease returns are returned/swapped out due to extra kilometers on them.

I don't know how much truth is in the so called 'Executive Leases' which the dealers seem to push in front of the customers.

A rental car with 9k kms on it makes no sense - surely the company can't have made any money off it. That is surely just a handful or rental times. Maybe it was a demo/test drive unit?  ???

You may want to check where they come from. I was looking at a used Vibe and was startled when the dealer mentioned it was an ex-rental from New Jersey. Now maybe they drive vehicles easy there, but that wasn't my first thought.

1. A right lane construction closure is just a game to see how many people can cut in line by passing you on the right as you sit in the left lane waiting for the same jerks to squeeze their way back in before hitting the orange construction barrels.

2. Turn signals will give away your next move. A real New Jersey driver never uses them.

3. Under no circumstances should you leave a safe distance between you and the car in front of you, or the space will be filled in by somebody else putting you in an even more dangerous situation.

4. Crossing two or more lanes in a single lane-change is considered "going with the flow."

5. The faster you drive through a red light, the smaller the chance you have of getting hit.

6. Never get in the way of an older car that needs extensive bodywork. The other guy doesn't have anything to lose.

7. Braking is to be done as hard and late as possible to ensure that your ABS kicks in, giving a nice, relaxing foot massage as the brake pedal pulsates. For those of you without ABS, it's a chance to stretch your legs.

8. Construction signs tell you about road closures immediately after you pass the last exit before the traffic begins to back up.

9. The new electronic traffic warning system signs are not there to provide useful information. They are only there to make New Jersey look high-tech and to distract you from seeing the police car parked in the median.

10. Never pass on the left when you can pass on the right. It's a good way to scare people entering the highway.

11. Speed limits are arbitrary figures, given only as suggestions and are apparently not enforceable in the metro area during rush hour.

12. Just because you're in the left lane and have no room to speed up or move over doesn't mean that a New Jersey driver flashing his high beams behind you doesn't think he can go faster in your spot.

13. Please remember that there is no such thing as a shortcut during rush-hour traffic in New Jersey.

14. Always slow down and rubberneck when you see an accident or even someone changing a tire.

15. Throwing litter on the roads adds variety to the landscape, keeps the existing litter from getting lonely, and gives Adopt-a-highway crews something to clean up.

16. Everybody thinks their vehicle is better than yours, especially pickup truck drivers with stickers of Calvin peeing on a Ford, Dodge or Chevy logo.

17. Learn to swerve abruptly. New Jersey is the home of high-speed slalom driving thanks to the New Jersey Department of Transportation, which puts potholes in key locations to test drivers' reflexes and keep them on their toes.

18. It is traditional in New Jersey to honk your horn at cars that don't move the instant the light changes.

19. Seeking eye contact with another driver revokes your right of way.

20. Never take a green light at face value. Always look right and left before proceeding.

21. Remember that the goal of every New Jersey driver is to get there first, by whatever means necessary.

22. Snow, ice, fog, and rain are no reasons to change any of the previously listed rules. These weather conditions are God's way of ensuring a natural selection process for body shops, junkyards, and new vehicle sales.

Actually, rentals with less than 10,000km are quite common. Based on the original sale dates, it appears that many rental companies operate on 6 month (or less) cycles. I assume they must switch out their fleets depending on the date rather than mileage.

A former boss of mine bought a "used" new Dodge Grand Caravan a few years back, it had less than 10,000 km on it.

It had been used for a specific event (a curling competition if I remember right, Scotts or Briar) and turned out to be a pretty good deal.  The dealer bought all the ones that had been used and was selling them at a good price.

So do not automatically discount these types of sales until you find out why they are on the lot with low kms.  They may not all be ex-rental (rental as we think of them anyway  ;) )

I don't quite get your attitude here. The OP asked if people would buy these cars. Some said no, and explained why. It's not like we posted saying, "How do I get a used vehicle less than a year old so I can avoid the depreciation?" or "Want a vehicle that's barely used and cheap? Don't buy a rental!"

I frequently saw rentals get the tar kicked out of them by customers and employees alike. We often were wondering what sucker would end up with them at auction.

Used is used. Ex rentals, leases demos, executive driven etc etc. Cars take a depreciation hit the second they drive off the lot. The amount of discount from new depends on condition,km, as well as supply and demand.

The woerd rental isn't the relevant point.

1. If you know the car was subjected to mutiple drivers, no maintence documents and an environment where its likley to be abused you should pay less or if you are risk averse avoid it all together.

2.If the car was a one owner with documented and maintence, little possibilityy of abuse then you should pay more.

If you can find a rental that meets criteria 2 great. But I think there is ample evidence that a large number of rental cars fall into 1. I know I certainly don't treat my rentals the same way I treat my own car. I know that I've encounterd large numbers of rentals with less than 20,000km on them with abnotrmally worn tires, alignment issues, stained interiors

If you can find a rental

Correct and you would hate it/them.  Loaded V6 Sontas another story, but the base stocker 4 cylinder model is horrible.

So ....... NO    :bang:

My response was based on the OP wanting a used 07. Some people said don't buy a rental. I explained that virtually all used 07s are rentals. So, if someone is going to say don't buy a rental they may as well say don't buy a used 07.

An BTW, I drove the living shite out of a number of vehicles that I've owned. Then I traded them in. Somebody eventually bought. But at least they weren't rentals...

Good point there Cord - someone could rag their car, maintain it, sell it and the seller would never know.

Another one:

I'm told by the dealer it's a Hyundai Auto Canada factory demo.

No ABS on this one.

That is why if your really concerned about the vehicle your buying you buy private.  But then you gotta sell your 500 privately.  :o

We have the opportunity to buy up to 4 new vehicles a year thru GM but only 2 at a time. I could buy the 1st one in Sept and trade it in by the end of Feb. I have to keep it 6 months in my name tho in order to be part of the same plan every year. Any GM,Ford or Chrysler employee or retiree has this right and many do play the game this way so their vehicles are not new but awful close with low milage on them generally. They always have a new vehicle with full warranty and most actually make a few dollars on them as well. The next owner gets a good buy this way and its not a rental at all. Depending on where you shop you can find these vehicles available.  :)
