Window, Door Rubber Seals Faded due to Wax?
« on: May 10, 2007, 02:53:26 pm »
Hello all,

Recently it was pointed out to me that the rubber seals around the doors and windows have turned from black to a grayish colour.  It was suggested that the waxing jobs I had done in the past were responsible.  I know that the instructions did say to keep the stuff off the rubber and I did that as well as I could, given the application methods available.

Regardless, what can be done to restore the original black colour?  Are there preferred products for this task?

Well, Barrie will recommend his tried and true GM Silicone Emulsion and I'll suggest Fluid Film.   ;D

Saff will suggest K-Y.  :rofl2:

I was recently told that a mr. clean eraser is great for removing that kind of residue.

I'm also going to HEAVILY urge you to try GM Silicone Emulsion. EXCELLENT PRODUCT!! I usually just grab some on my finger and apply it that way vs. using the little applicator thing which can be difficult to spread product with in tight spots. You can also use Meguiars #40 vinyl/rubber cleaner/conditioner, however the GM stuff lasts a considerably longer. Typically one can expect to have to apply the GM silicone emulsion 4-6 times per year, or monthly depending on how fast the weather-stripping dries out (this is a weather/climate related issue).

Its fairly inexpensive as well and can be purchased a ANY GM Dealership. (I think its like 2 or 3 dollars??)

If you happen to get a bit of excess product on the paint, it should clean off fairly easily. If that ever happens, I usually just take some Quik Detailer and a microfiber cloth to clean the excess emulsion off the paint.

LOL no.

I used to work for a GM dealership and thats what the techs used to use on weather-stripping to eliminate chatter when closing/opening doors.
