Do you think that the type of paint should be considered when looking which product to use?  Newer cars with their water based paints and clearcoats are different than the older cars such as classics etc.

KYLE...a question from us SILVER car owners  (99.777%!!! :P)...I had my Millenia treated when I bought it (2 years OLD)with the "TEFLON coating thingy" polish sealant offered by Ziebart when i got undercoating done...now I haven't polished it in 2 years except one application of Eagle 1 Nano Wax..I got fer FREE after rebate 2 years ago..so...........do Silver cars need anything ?? 'cos mine still looks good after just a basic bucket & soap driveway JOB????................

Is Silver the ANTI_BLACK  that U have to polish and buff hourly and u can just leave IT (Silver paint) alone 'cos it looks smashing brilliant with minimal fluffing.... ??? ::)

Welcome Kyle…. auto detailing guy. I am struggling to find a replacement for a good wheel/tire cleaner since the departure of Simple Green form the shelves. I will only use the “spray on wet tire” type which involves a pad or brush then rinse….any suggestions?

Simple Green products are gone, or just the wheel cleaner?

Welcome Kyle!

Silver cars can benefit from the TLC of a good polish and wax as much as black, but the results are less visibly dramatic.  It's the flip side of silver being perhaps the most forgiving colour in terms of hiding dirt, dust, swirls and scratches.  I bet if you gave that sexy Millenia a good once over you would find the results most worthwhile, even if it does not end up looking like a whole new car.  My BRAND NEW silver Altima looked noticeably better for receiving a treatment of Muguiar's NXT Tech Wax, though not dramatically so.  The Millenia is one of the best looking sedans ever to come out of Japan, IMHO - if it were mine I would not hesitate to put in the moderate effort and cost to make it looks its very best.

Regardless of any sealants or "final-protectants" applied to the paint, you still need to wax your car. Essentially with the 'gloss' and 'paint protection' type products, you are more or less paying for the guarantee that the paint will not fade, develop defects, etc. The actual product they apply could be just a regular car wax or something inferior to the decent products on the market.

Silver cars (and white/light coloured ones too) are particularly bad because they develop little rust specs, which are brake dust particles that bond to the exterior of the paint and sit for some time. Even if you have a final wax product applied to the finish, it will not prevent this type of thing from happening.

Your best bet is to use a clay bar on the vehicle at least once a year to remove these defects, prior to waxing. On the flip side, the clay bar also removes road girt and bonded surface contaminants which can cause a rough or gritty feeling on your vehicle's paint (even after waxing). The sure fire way I've found that touches on all of these aspects and provides a sure fire, well-protected finish is the following trusted 5-step method:

- wash and dry vehicle
- clay bar all painted surfaces
- clean the paint
- polish the paint
- wax/protect/seal the paint

If anyone is interested I can also recommend some products that will get the job done right, the first time.

Sorry about that MdX5  :)

The type of paint should certainly be taken into consideration when selecting a product to use. For instance, many paint finishes today are base-coat/clear-coat in nature, so there are a multitude of different products that can be used on them safely. With the older classic cars, many have a single-stage paint finish where the colour and protective finish are applied in one step. The disadvantage to this is that the paint can oftentimes fade, oxidize, etc more quickly when compared to newer paint finishes, and can often entail a bit more effort with respect to regular maintenance. Typically when waxing a single-stage paint finish you will notice that some of the paint will probably come off onto your wax applicator pad, and likewise when removing the product. I do not have much experience with products other than Meguiars when it comes to single-stage paint jobs, but I have however, used various Meguiars products on single-stage paint finishes and have had excellent results afterwards.

Feel free to e-mail me at: kyle@kgccs.com if you would like to discuss this further :) -and again I do apologize for the lateness of my reply.

 ;D Anytime!

Even though single-stage paint finishes may require a bit of extra TLC when performing regular waxing, polishing, etc, in most cases the end result is incredible 8)

What's your experience with stone/salt chips on the hood (specifically on a nice pearl white like on my TSX)?

I did what I thought was a very, VERY thorough job last summer (my neighbours would agree, they thought I was insane).  However over the winter the chips reappeared -- literally the same chips -- like the touchup paint "popped out" of the old chips.

Since there's all kinds of salt brine on the roads here in Ottawa in the winter, and with a 1-year old daughter at home taking my time, I haven't had much time to claybar the area and get rid of the rust seepage from the chips.  What would be your recommended plan of attack to help minimize the unsightly appearance of these chips?  I'm definitely planning on re-touching-up these chips this summer once I have a spare moment (currently selling my house = no time to do anytihng else).

Thanks Kyle.

And, to anyone in the Ottawa area looking for a GREAT detailing job, Kyle is your guy!  Took a few cars there and the results were always great!

Thanks for the kind regards Eric!

As for the chips, your best bet would be to clean-up the area as well as you can and perhaps see if CT has some primer in a small touch-up tube similar to the regular touch-up paint you can buy. At least this way if you apply the primer first, then the colour touch-up paint, it will create a better surface to bond to and perhaps last longer. Its worth a shot, or as an alternative maybe you can just apply several THIN layers of touch-up paint to create a similar end result.

If you're having doubts, or have any other questions, concerns, etc.. give me a shout!

Cheers!

Welcome Kyle!!  One of my 1st jobs as a teen was working at an auto detailing place.  I consider myself well above average for car care, but I can't wait to pick your brain and pick up some new tips or techniques!  I am somewhat of a product whore and try many products, always hoping to find one better than what I'm using now.  Pathetic, isn't it? :)  Anyways....great to have you here!!

Poorboys is really good.

Yes..they finish as nice as any other, but they seem to be just a touch easier to spread with a DA polisher.  They don't seem to dry out or ball up like others.  Oh..and they smell like bubblegum!!
