Where have all the colours gone?
« on: April 29, 2007, 11:16:45 pm »
I might have to move up a bit in size for our next vehicle. I've been going around the various websites and noticed the same dull colour palate on almost all of the Asian and European vehicles: Silver, charcoal, black, possibly a very dark blue, and just to be sporty, perhaps gunmetal.

The colour palate is practically Victorian. Strong colours? Certainly not! Evidence of a poor upbringing! A RED CAR! That's an affront to our moral rectitude!

At least some of the NA manufacturers  offer something in the way of colour, though perhaps Dodge is taking it a bit too far: ;D

My office manager drives a black-and-yellow Charger Daytona.  It looks like a bumblebee, if bumblebees were the size of humpback whales.

To address the main point of your original post, most cars offer red as a possible paint job...even very conservative cars like the Camry and the Elantra.  I do wish there were more green cars, though.  I love a nice deep emerald green, or better yet, British racing green.

I like silver.  :)   You could always have it custom painted.    Any colour is possible if you have enough money.

Silver is not my preference but it is easy to maintain. If I had more quality time for my car(s) they would all be black.

I would certainly like to see some regular colours... the things that you get in a spectrum, not muddy "designer colours" helped along by metalflakes or clearcoat.
My BMW green looks almost black except in sunlight... which I dont like as it makes it look dirtier than it usually is.
The FIT is a nice bright blue... not my choice... I would have had a red one.

Silver is easy to not clean.

Black looks best on virtually every car but is high maintenance.

Orange is fastest.

My choice for the FIT is lunar mist. It's not offered in Canada, only in the States and Europe.  :P :P
Just put the steering wheel in the DOWN position and the drive feels much better - watz up with that??

I am in the tiny minority that thinks black looks good on VERY few cars. Even if it weren't for the extra cleaning and extra heat in summer, I would not ever have another black car. I did have a black MG Magnette back in the '60s, but that was my only black car.

I wish there were more brighter colours or you could pay to special order.

When I bought my Aerio I was trying to decide whether to buy red or sapphire blue.  A friend of mine told me that reds tend to suffer more from fading and sun bleaching, so I opted for the blue.

Good point. My P1800 is Ferrari Guard Red and I love it. It's original colour was mustard yellow. I chickened out with the V70R and ordered Titanium. Red was just too attention grabbing for a Q ship and the Sonic Blue made the wagon look like a Subaru.

I think that, along with the maintenance laziness, the lack of stand-out factor is one of the reasons why people go for a gray car.  As much as I like the burnt orange and WRC blue colours that the Mazda3 has been available in, I went for boring medium gray (titanium in marketing speak) because the car blends in.  Now if the roof rack with the 3 bike trays would only blend in as well...

OT -- What did you end up getting? Were you able to get the Mazda version?

I already had the all-purpose Thule version from the MX-3 but now thanks to a very timely tip from a CTC member I managed to get a set of used Mazda bars.  The Mazda bars do mount much more easily and they're much quieter than the all-purpose bars.  They also sit quite a bit higher.

Yellow surprisingly hides the dirty well, but not many cars look good in yellow and almost all shades of yellow are pretty bad (except mine of course... and F cars and P cars).

White seems to work well too for some reason and it is easy to wash as you can tell where you cleaned it or not.

I like white. White would have been my first choice for the V70R.

I think older reds suffered from the sun for sure. I drove a pink Datsun pickup that was originally red.  Actually it was more of a dusty rose..
