CD Article: 2008 Audi R8
« on: April 23, 2007, 10:30:01 pm »
You may discuss our cover story of the day in this thread....
First Drive:
2008 Audi R8

2008 Audi R8The Audi R8 may be coming with a V10 version, but there's no need to wait to own a bona fide supercar, says Michael La Fave. He loves its "raucous thoroughbred V8" and "diabolically violent R-Tronic paddle-shift gearbox", and says "the chassis is the stuff of supercar legend". And with its long wheelbase, "this might be the sexiest car on Earth able to accommodate NBA stars."

I hate Michael La Fave.

Or, at a minimum, I want his job.
"Geography has made us neighbors. History has made us friends. Economics has made us partners. And necessity has made us allies. Those whom nature hath so joined together, let no man put asunder. What unites us is far greater than what divides us." -- John F. Kennedy, addressing Canadian Parliament.

Beautiful machine...  but I thought they weren't doing an V10 version, for fear of taking sales from the Gallardo?  Can't wait to see how the next-gen NSX stacks up to this beast...  *pokes Honda...  with a BIG stick*

I read that Honda took the NSX concept back to the drawing board after an overwhelmingly negative response to its looks and the front-engined, GT layout.

I hope you read the truth there, Mitlov.  Seeing what was proposed for the upcoming NSX was very disappointing indeed.

Seeing this new R8 (and reading so many good things about it), makes me wish (yet again), I was a much wealthier man.

I am anxious to read a report on the R8 from Laurence Yap.  Knowing what a Porsche fanatic he is, it'll be neat to hear his comparison between the two.

Me thinks more affordable R4 be more fun.  ;D

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/26/audi-to-make-new-r4-to-compete-with-porsche-boxter/

I think it'll need a V6 to sell...  I know many buyers of premium cars think poorly of four cylinder engines.  My father is one of them...  heh.  The Porsche and BMW no longer offer four cylinder options in the Boxster/Z4, so I think Audi would be making a mistake offering even a turbo four.

That said, a turbo-four could still be awesome.  The image (concept?) there looks great, and it's always nice to see more competition in the "affordable sport scar" segment.  :)

Will it be convertible, though?

Hmm....it would be tough to choose an Audi over a Porsche.

For only $20, I'll hit you in the face with a hockey stick.  How's THAT for an affordable sport scar?   ;D

This is true.

Audi is on a pedestal, but Porsche plays with the gods.

Not just tough, but impossible IMO. Having looked at Audi again recently, I remain convinced I will never own another Audi. I just cannot warm up to that marque at all.  :P

I would choose the Audi R8 over the Porsche 911, but expect I'm in the minority.

Of course, they'll both technically be Porsches soon enough.

Don't mean to hi-jack the thread, but I really hope Honda doesn't build the proposed NSX. I think the next gen NSX should remain true to the original, Mid-engine, rear-wheel drive, light as possible, 2 seater sports car.

:iagree:

And I wouldn't chose between the R8 and the 911 without a good deal of seat time in both.  Though getting a proper test drive of the R8 would probably be very tough.  :(
