You may discuss our cover story of the day in this thread....
First Drive:
2007 Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera
2007 Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera

2007 Lamborghini Gallardo SuperleggeraLess is more: the new Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera sheds 70 kg over its conventional sibling through extensive use of carbon fibre parts. That, plus a 10 hp increase, propels the new supercar from zero to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds. Assistant Editor Jil McIntosh travels to Arizona to see just what a supercar on a diet can do.

Beautiful car, great performance - I'll take two please!

That said, with the intro of the new Audi R8 which is based on the same platform, is significantly cheaper, and is rumoured to get the Gallardo engine in the future, I wonder how Lambo is going to keep the Gallardo unique...

Where's the "but is it reliable?" crowd when you need them?   ;D

Emotionally, I find the 911 and the R8 more appealing.  And with cars like this, emotion is really all that matters.

:iagree:

Lambos and Ferraris do nothing for me compared to Porsches and the high end Audis.

I think I'd probably be OK being .2 seconds slower to 60 and keeping the creature comforts. With the money I saved I could afford to send my wife/GF and myself to a personal trainer and shave off 20 or 30 lbs of "vehicle weight" that way.

Nice car, but if they wanted to save more weight, why not make it RWD only.  On top of all the carbon fibre-bits they added.

Anyway I'm not really sure why Lambo is going in this direction.  I thought their cars are just poser-mobiles and cruising GT cars.  ???

I find most of Audi's line-up incredibly boring compared to the competition...  about the only one that does anything for me is the RS4.

I would much prefer the Gallardo to the R8.  Maybe it's me, but the R8 seems like a pretty boy driving a respectable station wagon...  the Gallardo is something of a hellion riding a Harley and wearing a leather jacket.  If you want a stupid, high performance car, I don't know that there's a substitute...

To me, the R8 is Clive Owen and the Gallardo is Sylvester Stallone.

The RS4 is basically happiness on wheels, but I just love the distinct "synergy" (is that the right word?) of Audi designs. They all look like a family, yet all just different enough to notice. Plus, the look is modern, timeless, and classy. Very little in the way of excess on those cars.

BMW also qualified for this in the past, but they've jumped the proverbial shark lately. Damn those headlights and the butt.

To me the Superleggera is pointless.  Lamborghinis are bought to show off.  They're wild colours, loud noises and outrageous styling -- and fast.  If you want something to get serious about on the track, Porsche has its GT3 and Ferrari the Challenge Stradalle cars.

If it were my money (and obviously if you're looking at Lambos, you've got enough money to have already bought everything else you NEED), I'd go for the Gallardo Spyder.  Or save for an extra while and get the even more outrageous Murcielago.  In orange.  :)

For those who are a little unimpressed with Lambos... you need to see and feel and hear one in the flesh to fully appreciate what they do to people.

A few weeks ago when visiting friends, I opened their garage to find (among other treasures)... this beasty waiting for me to drool on it (sorry for the crappy pics):

Someone in Ashland has a purple Lambo (I don't know whether it's a Gallardo or Murcielago).  In person, I thought it was ugly and made him look like a rich doofus.  I had no emotional reaction to it at all in person.

Now, a C3 Corvette or an Audi S4, that's a different matter...

The thing with the Gallardo is that it's a little too "german" ... the Murcielago has a little more Italian in its DNA.

The Superlegga is just another collectors car.  I doubt that most of them will ever see the track ... but it's a relatively good investment if you ever sell it back.

Not compared to to a person who takes the same amount of cash, uses it to buy a far-cheaper-but-still-eminently-satifsying car (Cayman?  Z4?  G35 coupe?  RX-8?) and then invests the rest in diversified stocks.  Just for the record.

Then again, anyone with that much cash laying around doesn't need to sweat the details.

The interior bits are a little too reminiscent of other Audis (the audio controls look like they've been lifted directly from an A4)... but I assure you, when you take the time to really appreciate all the exterior details, it's got the passion for artistic design that only the Italians seem to know how to master in their cars.  And the sound of that engine is unlike ANYTHING I've ever heard come out of Germany.

Of course, I'd still prefer a Ferrari or even a few Porsches... but I am far more impressed by the Gallardo now than I was before.

IIRC, Jeremy Clarkson replaced his Ford GT with a Gallardo.  And the man loves Ferrari.  I think Lambos are meant to be seen (and heard), if you want a car to really drive, the Ferrari is the answer.

I also prefer the classic design of the Ferrari to the outrageous look of the Lambos, except for one: the Gallardo spyder, in a dark colour (or white) with the roof down, is drop dead gorgeous.  Not such a fun of the bright colours.
